Brilliant!

Right, well seems I've got a good chance of catching my train, I'll report back in a couple of weeks. Thanks for everyone's input.

OP, its usually fast. Unless a flight from a "target country" has just come in, and the customs guys are busy pulling apart each of the 10 bags that those passengers travel with.

I've had to declare things multiple times, and given I'm always armed with receipts and other appropriate paperwork, they usually get my payment processed in under 10 minutes.

However, I also remember coming in on a Sunday night, having just been married abroad, and hadn't unpacked the suitcase of wedding presents I'd received on that trip. I marched up to the customs guys, told them I didn't know contents or values, but was pretty certain there would be booze in some of the boxes, and I'd be significantly over the alcohol limit. The chaps smiled, wished me luck and showed me the exit route.

Another time, I'd received a bunch of wrapped presents from family who gifted them to me at the departure airport. Again, I marched up to the Swiss customs guys, 'fessed up that I had no idea of content other than it was likely to be food and booze and over the CH limits ("but please when you unwrap it could you not tell me the contents as I'm not supposed to open them until my birthday next week"), and they once more kept me walking through.

Yet another time, I'd bought a piece of jewellery abroad that was definitely over the Swiss customs value limit. Straight into the red zone, offered it up, the chap yawned, closed his little paper pad, and wished me a good night.

Go figure....
It's almost as if they're bored & disinterested with mundane and honest commuters and eager to find the exotic animal and drug smugglers. At least the latter makes both their lives and dinner conversations somewhat more exciting...!!

I don't think I've ever volunteered to venture through the red zone - might do it for kicks to declare a single 'Mind the Gap' t-shirt the next time I'm in London...

Sounds like a pretty special t-shirt, if you're paying over CHF 300 (the tax-free import limit per person) for it...

It's very special when you consider the contraband woven into the breast pocket

- Anyone have experience of going through Zurich airport customs declaration?
- Is it manned late at night? (they say yes on their website, but what if I can't find anyone, do I just walk through?)
- Has anyone used the online app (www.quickzoll.admin.ch) for this?
Yes and no. I have experience by being basically randomly selected to open my bags and show them to customs.

It usually took 5 minutes: "where do you come from. what did you buy. anything to declare?"

Another time, it was actually my mom who was stopped. I was waiting outside the gates. Because she doesn't speak German, they let me inside to help as a translator. It took over 30 minutes. The guard was in a pretty foul mood, basically accused my mom of trying to smuggle stuff into Switzerland without declaring, did not believe when my mom said she had no alcohol in her luggage (she didn't, as it was obvious when we opened the bags), and was actually about to demand me to open the presents she had for my 1 year old son (She asked me what it was, and when I told her it was a present for my son, so no idea, probably a toy, she was mumbling something about not being allowed to bring stuff like this through the border. It was a book). This was a pretty late flight (22h30).

So yeah, sometimes good, sometimes bad. Sometimes fast enough, sometimes slow enough.

Re: How long does customs at Zurich Airport take

Only took ~15 min when I went through last month, had 2 items to declare. They are pretty quick. It was at 10pm at night.

If I go to them, clutching receipts and in by best German (as Swiss as I can manage), maybe they will be in a friendly mood! When you read this forum ("just walk through...") you can understand why they conduct spot checks with a sceptical mind

Don't forget not to lie about it being your birthday...

Their next question will probably be "Passport please...", then they will know.

Why declare anything, why not bring in "baby powder", "oregano", and this stuff billard balls were made of?
Good idea of products to smuggle in CH!

Re: How long does customs at Zurich Airport take

I've been pulled aside twice (fly in 3-4 times a month) in 10 years.

Both incidents they gave me a hard time but no fines or charges, even with having items that should have had documentation but didn't.

The one time they were determined to prove I was over the allowed amount: documented every chocolate bar, candy, pack of gum container of spices. Adding up all the costs (I had the receipts as well). Then went on to ask about the clothing I was wearing, where I bought it? when? do I still have the receipts? (3 year old winter jacket with obvious wear!).

They were pretty disappointed when they let me go.
