Whereas as an anti aircraft missile does the job far more quickly and efficiently?
..
Indeed, but it helps to identify what you're shooting at.

Mark 1 eyeballs in a fast jet tends to work

If they get close enough to another jet to recognise it then unfortunately they already had an air to air missile up their whatsit?

Many air to air missiles have a range of 100 to 200 KM.

You're talking about the mythical BVR ("Beyond Visual Range") engagement.

tl;dr

Quote:
Considering that BVR missiles generally cost 2-5 times as much as IR WVR missiles, yet are 44% as effective, it is easy to calculate that they are only 8,8-22% as cost-effective as IR missiles, while in most cases not offering noticeable advantage in engagement range, and at same time incurring cost and capability penalties on aircraft designed to use them.
So mythical that most fighter jets still carry cannons and carry short range Sidewinder/ASRAAM type missiles.

BVR requires reliable IFF and is far more susceptible to ECM etc etc

Does not matter though does it?

Switzerland is a very small country. So an attacking jet fires its BVR missile and while the Swiss jet is doing its anti missile manoeuvres the attacker drops its load and departs.

Because war is linear?
You expect the Swiss to tell them "hang on, we'll get back to you in a few minutes"?

Re: Fighter Jets Switzerland

Last week, representatives from the U.S. government and from U.S. aerospace companies Lockheed Martin and The Boeing Company submitted their proposals for the jets F35 Lightning II and the F18 Super Hornet to the Swiss authorities. The U.S. are honored to be a part of the Swiss acquisition process for a fighter aircraft replacement.
