Best places to buy women's work clothes in CH?

Hi Ladies!

I've recently been invited to interview for a job in Zug which looks pretty promising. It also will likely require a completely new wardrobe as the US dress code is very different from here. I've been told in my industry (public accounting) it's very much still a suit culture, and I definitely don't have more than one suit left in my closet back home (not with me in CH)...

I'll likely also need something for my interview... I brought a businessy dress with me, but now I'm thinking that's not enough given a lady at the company I'm applying with told me they're pretty formal...

My problems are that I'm not familiar with Swiss clothing stores or most of the brands I see here, and I don't have a job yet so I don't have a lot of $$ to spend on new clothes....

So, where do you go to buy your suits/businesses attire?? Any places I should avoid because of poor quality or stigma? Where would you go to get a good deal on a nice suit (factory stores and sales racks are my favorite)?

I live in Aarau, but gave a GA and am always up for adventures to new places.

If it helps at all in your suggestions, I'm slightly taller than average, thin and super curvy (read: big butt & thighs) which makes fit hard - I find UK brands typically fit better than US brands, but don't know much past that...

Landquart is easily accessible by train. The experience can be “hit or miss” (like TK Maxx or Marshalls) but if one is looking for better quality at less than the ZH Bahnhofstrasse there are good deals to be found. Go on a weekday to avoid crowds.

Maybe visit Metzingen. https://www.outletcity.com/de/metzingen/
Or it's still sales now. Try Esprit, Benetton, C&A und H&M. Maybe also Zara or Mango. Also check the sale at Globus. Or even Modissa but that is more pricey. All these shops are in Zurich. There is also Navyboot I have a nice set from there. They sell it at Globus.

Or look at Zalando for some ideas. They also do free returns if you get the wrong size or you don't like the purchase.

If all the suggestions above don't work out for you, many UK stores deliver to Switzerland, but you do get stung about 40 CHF by the Post a few days after delivery.

My fella has big calf muscles so we had to order from the UK when skinny legs were in fashion here. He couldn't find any trousers that went over his knees in Zurich, and isn't the most patient of shoppers. I got him 5 pairs of trousers in the House of Fraser sale on that occassion. I've had deliveries from Next, Monsoon and Debenhams for myself.

Standard delivery from House of Fraser was 4 working days, but the order arrived on the second day. Next and Monsoon took 4 days and Debenhams 6 days.

Just a little tip seeing as you're American, if you like Zara or Desigual clothes, treat yourself to a trip to Spain for a weekend and stock up there.

Edit: Quite a lot of the stock you'll find in UK stores is also on Zalando's website, as mentioned by Sandgrounder.

Re: Best places to buy women's work clothes in CH?

PKZ on the ZH Bahnhofstrasse (near Globus) also sells a variety of brands including Reiss eg. Sale at 50% now on many items, 70% should come soon.

Personally I would not recommend C&A or H&M for interview suitable workwear unless you are straight out of uni or 6th form, as from your description of the employer they have textile-sensitive spectacles, particularly any females you might encounter.

Guilty but only because I'm allergic to polyester. I can spot a good piece in linen or silk at 50 paces. Can't afford it, but I do appreciate it. Sorry Sandgrounder. Where I secretly get judgemental is the tailoring of men's suits (particularly where the trouser leg falls on the shoe) and tie choices. I have bought a vintage Jaeger silk tie for my OH before now.

Benetton is good. It is advisable not to have a better suit than your (female) interviewer.

And no brand logos showing. It would definitely annoy me if the person has a shirt with gucci on the front. Show off..

Of course, i go to work in shorts and a t-shirt so what do i know about dressy stuff..

In such a case Zara might not fit.

You might want to walk down the Zurich Bahnhofstrasse. Thats form the lake/Bürkliplatz to the Trainstation. This way it will only get cheaper Do not miss a detour to Jelmoli and Globus. And the walk along Rennweg-Strehlgasse-Storchengasse. That will give you a feel what is available from dirt cheap to mind boggling expensive.

Also go there on a regular weekday to see the natives in their natural habitat

Re: Best places to buy women's work clothes in CH?

Mango, Zara and I buy a lot at Orsay (H&M type store but with a surprisingly good selection of work-appropriate clothes). Zalando has a trillion options too, from cheap to high-end.

I have well been wearing some H&M clothes for years. No one has ever noticed they're H&M and even if they did - so what. Of course I'm not wearing the pink glitter top, but H&M for sure has a lot of good basics and they're not better or worse than those of others.

Not sure what "big butt and thighs" means, particularly in terms of size. Women here lean on the slim side, so most items from run-of-the-mill clothing stores are in respective sizes and fits.

Pants I buy in the US at Express and occasionally have them delivered here. They're the only work pants that really fit, but I'm fairly tall and they come in long sizes, which is what I need.

Re: Best places to buy women's work clothes in CH?

Thanks for all the great advice! Now that I've completed my shopping mission, I figure I'll share my results (FWIW).

I struck out at Landquart, but eventually found a cute navy suit at PKZ (although I had to go to both Zurich & Basel stores to get the skirt in my size...And I think it was about 40% off, although still more than I would have paid at the Karen Millen outlet in the States). Found a screaming deal on some navy pumps at the Navyboot outlet at Fashion Fish (more stores there than I thought!). Half price purse from Manor, add a full price Navyboot shirt from Globus (I cried a little at the pricetag, but I'll wear it all the time), and I've got my interview outfit! And an interview lined up for tomorrow - wish me luck!

I'm not quite sure what you mean. The nature of the job is business formal. I've been looking for six months for a job that will even consider sponsoring my work visa (I'm American), and how I sell myself in this interview could make a difference of 15,000 chf in pay depending on which role they hire me into - so it's worth it to me to stress a little over looking the part of a more sophisticated/professional interviewee...

FWIW, in the US the company I am applying with is consistently in the top 100 companies to work for, and is in the top 10 for women - I can't imagine they are not a good company to work for in a country with a higher standard of living!
