little bugs - what are they?

Hi all,

it's been a couple days that I see the little bugs (see attached photos), mainly in the kitchen area. They are around 1mm big and their shell/body is a little hard. They can even fly, although they are not good pilots and they don't care to hide when you hunt them (like the mosquitoes for example). I'm not an expert, but they don't look like fruit-flies.

Also, they seem to come out out of nowhere; I have no food leftover around, and although there is a garden in the backyard, they seem to appear even when the windows are closed.

Do you know what are they and how I get rid of them?

Check your flour, cereals and hard bread. You probably have some unwelcome guests there.

Re: little bugs - what are they?

thanks for the quick replies guys, but i'm not sure they're carpet beetles; according to wikipedia carpet beetles are bigger than 1mm =/

on the other hand, i do have carpet. BUT still, i had these carpets for almost 2 years, and these bugs appeared a couple weeks ago.

i also checked bread/flour/cereals, all secure

i mean, do they teleport in the apartment or what

They crawl in through the window pores.

If you cover all the windows of your apartment with aluminium foil, it should discourage them.

Re: little bugs - what are they?

If you bring a sample of specimen to the dedicated EF’s labs, we will be able to diagnose the outbreak still before midnight. Otherwise we could also do it during normal Gemeinde’s opening hours. Your choice. Also, don’t forget to fill in the entry form. We can start as soon as the payment is thru.

Good luck with fighting those little bastards!

Re: little bugs - what are they?

Are they magnetic?

You can find out by holding a speaker near them (a bluetooth or computer speaker will do). If they are attracted to the speaker, then they're magnetic. If they are repelled by the speaker, then you might want to have a look at your playlist.

Re: little bugs - what are they?

Definitely carpet beetles. Back home, the name for them is leather eater - so even if you don't have carpets, they will be around leather furniture.

"Did you know: Dermestids have a variety of habits; most genera are scavengers that feed on dry animal or plant material, such as skin or pollen, animal hair, feathers, dead insects and natural fibers.wikipedia.org"

You can find them in the parquette cracks, if you have old ones, too. Pharmacy should be able to tell you what to do with them, in the meantime, air and vacuum frequently? They can come in from neighbors, or bags/furniture you bought.

Re: little bugs - what are they?

This spring, I got something similar on all our citrus trees. I looked at many places but could not figure out. I tried to kill them with my standard alcohol+dishwasher mixture, but it really did not have any effect. They disappeared as suddenly as they came. They did not damage the plants at all. But that confuses me even more.

What Tilia says. We had them too, and although we have carpets, they are not carpet beetles (those are bigger, not 1mm as you mention). Their "nest" in our case was some beans, which were inside a plastic bag - which bag was inside another plastic bag. So, you get the idea, they can get to stored food/supplies that you might not even think about.

Double check any stored food/supplies (cooked or not) and if you find the nest, don't think about "cleaning" some food and throw the infected. Just throw everything you have in that shelf/location, and clean thoroughly with some chemicals.

Good luck!

True, they probably laid eggs near a food source.

once I had an infestation of small hardy bugs, they came from a pillow filled with seeds, it was in a random closet since years but one day it woke up for some reason.

That's just to say, expect the unexpected.
