The New Swiss Poverty Line for Expats - CHF200K

Average salary for expats is now apparently CHF200K according to the “Show Me the Money” ranking by the latest survey! ($203k converted to CHF at roughly 0.99)

Time to switch jobs me thinks!

I think the only righteous conclusion can be:

The expat who has taken this survey has a higher average income compared to expats not taking the survey.

Whoever took a survey must have been “killjoy”

Reading it, I have an impression that I’m highly underpaid

If I had agreed with everything Bloomberg suggests, I would have been one of the most gullible investors on the planet earth.

It’s a known fact that averages (arithmetic means) are not a good barometer for estimating “typical” incomes because of the way that the very high salaries (i.e outliers) skew this figure.

This can easily be demonstrated by this example:

- 2 poor immigrant earning 80k per year.
- 7 average Joes from EF earning 120k per year.
- 1 big swinging **** expat earning 1m per year.

Mean (Average) = CHF200K
Median = 120k?
Mode = 120k

Still the mean is probably good enough for click bait articles. If anything it probably shows that there are probably a lot more high earners skewing the figures for us paupers!

Interesting that average salaries for expats in India and Indonesia are around $130k though... I mean that would mean that expats are living like kings over there no?

As an expat, they keep their home salary.

Can imagine that someone going from a higher salary country to India or Indonesia would only agree to do so for at least the same salary + ensuring that his family’s standard of living doesn’t take a hit. (E.g. schooling of kids in a good international school)

But still, does no one immigrate to India from lower salary countries? Or do those not qualify for being called expats?!

Definiton of expats:

Expats are especially pampered immigrants.

Useful foreign executives with tax privileges that do not have
to integrate. They are first class immigrants.

Can someone please pass one of these outrageously well paid positions to me? Or to my husband, that would do too. Hard to live in such a country on one “poor immigrant salary”

Re: The New Swiss Poverty Line for Expats - CHF200K

Maybe the definition of expat is that of one using some premium tier relocation services which organize you a private school for your kids, a nice house for the spouse etc. The newspaper is pretending to be read by such a corporate careerist class do it is selling that image to its readers, where the rest of the lot is just immigrants or maybe skilled immigrants.

That is utter and complete bullshit. We arrived back in the hey day of expat packages brimming with extras, but we pay taxes (in two countries) just like anybody else. We are completely assimilated and are retiring in France in five months and never going back to our original country.

You have no idea what you are talking about and, btw, those stellar expat packages went out the window about 5 years ago. Multinationals only recruit people on local packages now. Get with the times and stop being insulting to people you know nothing about.

Not entirely, though I’ll grant you they’re becoming both less lucrative and rarer.
