Anyone know how the garbage police go about searching your household trash bags for forbidden items?

Why? What are you trying to dispose of?

Not true, and it also does not allow to put the bags out the evening before collection which is what OP did.
Depends on where you are, very much Canton and commune dependent. Here you are allowed to put out the night before (in the official green bins).

Wow, that looks nice, here we only have that for glass. Still a dumpster for the bags or in some streets, just dumping the bags on the street on collection day.

A few of the posh places have those subterranean rubbish containers in ZH, also if you walk down Rennweg, they have them too. I remember losing chunks of time with my son when he was little, having to watch the truck come to lift them out of the ground and empty all the sacks.

They make them in the next village.

We have them for glass, pet and metal too, depends on the location.

Paper goes in a big dumpster with a built in crusher.

They stopped street collection in Ticino 20+ years ago.

Neuchâtel has those too.
It’s not just little kids wasting time watching them, my husband did it too when he saw one being emptied the first time.

Forbidden items. Just what do you mean there? Think carefully before you answer

Are they taking bags away at random from your doorstep before pickup, or do they pick bags off the truck back at the yard so to speak.
It is quite possible that, if the rubbish bags are not well filled, a neighbour is collecting them, consolidating the contents into fewer bags, and keeping the surplus one for his/her own use.

Our rubbish sacs are always bulging at the seams, but I often notice some of the sacks in our communal container have a lot of spare capacity. At about 6 francs for a taxed 110 liter sack, someone must be tempted.

When there is a scrap metal collection (every 6 months here) I always look carefully at what people are throwing away and would not hesitate to help myself to interesting items.

I have also recently put out cut and bundled tree branches (laurel etc.) out for the green waste collection and noticed that these disappeared in advance of the collection. I guess for a wood burning stove or a barbecue although green laurel would not be ideal for that.

Re: Garbage Police

It is highly unlikely anybody would check what is in an official sack. The sack is official, paid for, end of story.

There are plenty of non official and unpaid sacks to check first anyway

Re: Garbage Police

I always wondered about the price of bags and bulk goods stickers. The stickers cost Fr. 2, and allow you to dispose of goods that can be burned up to 150cm in length/height and up to 5kg in weight. What's the point in the 110L bags at 6 francs each? It's my understanding that the regular rubbish bags go for incineration anyhow.

Edit: nevermind, it's just not allowed. It's in the Entsorgungsverband's website's FAQs:

Frage: Darf ich schwarze Säcke mit Sperrgutmarken für meinen Abfall verwenden?
Antwort: Nein. Es sind nur offizielle Fairplay-Gebührensäcke erlaubt. Sperrgutmarken sind nur für Sperrgut erlaubt. » zu den Verkaufsstellen

Who would want giant garbage bins permanently located in front of their house?

And as a matter of interest, would anybody really have the time, inclination or desire to sift through a vast subterranean holding tank to check that the correct garbage bags (or vignettes) have been used?

Not sure about the subterranean bit but this recent thread shows that some people are willing to roll their sleeves up and get stuck in...

Actually we can use black bags with the stickers. (Were we supposed to throw them away when they changed to the special bags?). But I'm in canton Zurich, so things are different most likely.

The 110liter bags take any little junk you collect. Would be difficult to label each little piece with one of these stickers
If you want to get rid off let's say a chair it would be equally difficult to get it into a 110liter bag.

In my area, more often than not, these are placed either in larger building parking lots or in public spaces (such as the little square in front of the fire department where they also collect glass and metal, or in larger public parking squares).

One would hope so, and hopefully the building in Tom's photo is not an apartment block (it looks like a school, maybe?), but nevertheless that means walking quite some distance to throw your (heavy, leaking) garbage bags out. I'm pretty sure my 85-year-old neighbour would have some issues with that, especially if she ever wanted to dispose of a 110L bag of garbage.

I'd wager that even the most motivated garbage-sifter would baulk at climbing down into a dark, enclosed space to examine age of detritus. But then again, some people are into BDSM, going to the gym, or cosplay, and I don't really get that either.

Re: Garbage Police

When I was a kid, my mother lived in a building with a "hole in the wall" next to the elevator on each floor where one could throw in the garbage bag in anytime one liked. It fell to the cellar where I suspect it was picked up from once or twice a week.

I think they stopped building these things. Must have been a messy business for the housekeeper. Even if everybody uses bags - when one comes down from the 6th floor .....
