Cable Car over Zurich Lake... what do you think?

https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/public-...lecar/44517980

So soon, there is likely to be a cable car built over the middle of the Zurichsee, sponsored by ZKB as a gift. It will go over the lake between Mythenquai and Zurichhorn.

Personally, I think it pollutes a nice natural landscape with an unnecessary blight. But hey, that's my opinion.. what do you all think?

I've posted an anonymous poll above, so feel free to vote.

Re: Cable Car over Zurich Lake... what do you think?

The link shows one picture of the proposal.

It is for 5 years, by which time ZKB hopes it will be profitable (some gift!). The London Eye was also supposed to be temporary for five years, so you never know, but I would expect that it would in this case actually be temporary.

Re: Cable Car over Zurich Lake... what do you think?

Maybe the big bank which is a sponsor of the Zurich Zoo will fiance and build something which is longer lasting for its anniversary: Like the long anticipated cable car from Stettbach train station up to the Zoo. https://www.zsz.ch/ueberregional/Neu...story/11072374

Hmm , if I were only able to remember the name of this other bank.

Personally, I completely hate it. What a stupid idea, to pollute a nice natural landscape with an unnecessary blight. But hey, that's my opinion..

I've posted a poll and invite comments!
It's close enough to the city to blend in with all the other modernity, though. It's not exactly out in the mountain-y / green-y bit further along the lake. That's when it would perhaps look a bit out of place.

I'll respectfully disagree with your view that it will 'blend in'

Here is a zkb sponsored vid, glorifying it up

Also pictures of the cable cars which were in use during the Landi 1939 and the Gartenbauausstellung G59. The latter was in use from 1959 to 1966.

Re: Cable Car over Zurich Lake... what do you think?

Thanks for posting this, it's really interesting. It is of course going to be a bit of an eyesore, except for the people riding the thing - which then is probably going to be fantastic. Reminds me a bit of the cable car to go up to the zoo in Sydney - except that in Sydney, the thing exists for a purpose other than the view from the cabin.

Re: Cable Car over Zurich Lake... what do you think?

I can't help thinking what better things could be done for 40 to 60 million Swiss Franks.
Plus: This idea is not new. We obviously already had it twice.
Okay, I've never seen/ridden one but I think my life wouldn't be ruined it I had to do without that chance.

Will the bank take that money off the income before taxes?

I wouldn't go demostrating against it though either.
True, a tunnel would be better. It's a pain in the neck to drive from Wollishofen to Seefeld. They would be welcome to call it the "Zürcher Kantonalbank Tunnel" for ever - even if they only payed a of 60 million part of it.

Actually, it existed twice before. I think in both cases as a tempoarry installation, I think once for the Landi Expo in 1939 and also for another occasion.

Especially when you consider that ‘it’ll ruin my view’ is not a valid reason to get your neighbours building something.

still a lot nicer and more useful than that horrible crane a few years ago. If that crane got permission that this cable car definitely should too.

Re: Cable Car over Zurich Lake... what do you think?

I'd agree that the masts won't be nice to look at. But so are many other buildings - don't get me started on the Toni block of concrete, for instance (now Zürichs Hochschule der Künste). It would make bypassing Bürkliplatz and Bellevue when you need to get to the other side of the lake a trivial thing.

They should make that masts multi-use, for instance provide jumping platforms for swimmers, bungee jumping, and whatnot. For stability reasons the masts probably need to be tilted somewhat, so those jumping on the lakeside may be guaranteed to land in the water. Make the basin below deep enough (the lakeground will need to be dug out for mast foundation anyways) and you automatically get a (relatively) safe jumping spot.

In my view, the intention to build the stations by the Chinese garden and by the Mythenquai Badi show the cable car is more a tourist and fun ride than a useful transport link. Otherwise they would place the stations in locations that already are or could readily become public transport hubs. How about Tiefenbrunnen station to Wollishofen station for example?

In one word: space.

The masts would be much less "visible" if built inland, but that requires free land, and it would extend the distance to be covered. Perhaps Helm can shed a bit of light on that, but personally I'd expect the to-be-harnessed strains and forces to grow much quicker than linear to the distance, a quadratic function (at least, because the additional material itself increases them, too) seems much more likely.

But seeing the stations are in the air, they can easily fit in above existing facilities at said stations, with some modifications of course to provide access to the platforms.

I don't think the strains on cables are an issue. The longest single span on a cable car at present is a shade above 3km, somewhere in Asia I think. The distance from Tiefenbrunnen to Wollishofen stations is also just short of 3km. Furthermore, intermediate supports could be provided at the lake side or even in shallow water near the shore, thus shortening the span to something much more manageable. That would even make the overall construction and operation easier as the towers on the lakeside would have to be pretty high to allow for the sag of the cable and to make sure that even at maximum sag the cable cars don't interfere with shipping. But having the stations at such a height would be logistically difficult because you would need a lift just to get people up to the stations. So lower stations make sense with the cable car initially rising up to the first intermediate tower.
