Where to buy a personal safe online?

Hello all. Does anyone know of any websites where I can order a smaller floor safe online in Switzerland (35-40L)? I have found only a couple (e.g. Hornbach), but the selection is limited and the prices tend to be VERY high (at least CHF 1500 if not 3000). This is crazy as I have found nice sturdy ones online in France and the UK that hover around €250-300. Sadly, they don't deliver or if they do, it costs almost as much as the actual safe.

Any ideas? I'd rather have someone who delivers because some of them weigh quite a bit and as a single female, I'm not keen on breaking my back.

Thanks!

Re: Where to buy a personal safe online?

This is a good question. I left an older rolling fireproof safe with mechanical combination lock behind in the US. I was basically told it could be easily replaced here and wasn't worth the cost to move. As it turns out, it's not so easy to replace and would cost as much as the entire move to buy new.

I'm not exactly sure what makes the cost for such things so high here. Perhaps the only people buying them are businesses - watch, jewelry, etc. I haven't even been able to find a decent locking document box. Maybe there is just not any interest from customers.

Occasionally, I see old safes at the Brockis, but they are also crazy high priced it seems. There was a particularly nice one I found though, but it required a forklift to move.

When looking on Ricardo and Tutti, I usually search for Tresor. As far as websites, I'm not familiar with any and would welcome the information as well.

Re: Where to buy a personal safe online?

I believe a lot of people have safe-deposit boxes at banks for their most valuable, non-replaceable stuff.
And for the rest, insurance pays anyway...

My educated guess would be that safes need to pass some Swiss inspection, conform to some Swiss standard and this is expense and not done by manufacturers for "cheap" sages.

Hornbach.de
Search for 'feuersicher'

No idea if it's practical for you or not.

Re: Where to buy a personal safe online?

Just be weary of those ~100chf safes. Most are trivial to open...

One we tested even could be opened with a sturdy whack with your hand on top... the spring holding the bold was pretty weak...

Re: Where to buy a personal safe online?

Note that if a 'safe' doesn't have a rating for burglary resistance, either from the UL-TL/TR sequence (in the US) or EN 1143 (Euro standard grades VdS 0-6) sequence, you should assume that it isn't really any better than a locking filing cabinet.

Personally, I think it'd be better if such constructs were advertised as 'fire resistant lock-boxes', as the word safe seems a bit of an exaggeration.

On the other hand, even safes rated at the lower end of the EN 1143 and UL rating scales tend to be a lot more expensive than said lock boxes. I won't quite say that you get what you pay for, but good security (assuming this is what you are after) is not cheap. If you want to go in this direction within Switzerland, you might search for something like "Tresor EN 1143-1" and pay attention to the listed grade.

Poking around a bit at search results, Zengaffinen Tresor appears to have a decent selection, including some smaller relatively affordable (sub 1k) VdS-1 safes.

Re: Where to buy a personal safe online?

One option is to rent a safe compartment at your bank instead of buying your own. https://www.bilanz.ch/invest/schlies...gleich-716496#

Of course these small, cheap safes are not particularly secure, but I wonder if they have a sort of decoy value, that a burglar would simply prize it off the wall (or whatever mounting), and believing that it may contain cash, valuables etc. would then tend to leave more quickly taking, it with him, instead of conducting a further and potentially destructive search of the premises. That means that you would not actually use the safe for anything of value.

I did hear, incidentally, a recommendation for safes which contain items which themselves have no intrinsic value, but could be misused (in this case it concerned car inspection certificates ) that a small cylinder of butane should be put in the safe to destroy the contents if it were to be subject to violent cutting or drilling. There are also purpose designed safes with some self destruct capability (using thermite etc.) but in a higher price category.
