Re: Switzerlanded or Stupid?

It is a shame that terrorists have latched on to the phrase and it's now become inextricably linked to terrorism.

I guess, a bit like Hitler's moustache, it's harmless in itself but nobody is going to grow one these days.

It's even more of a shame because Allah just means God. It's not even an 'Islamic' word. Arabic predates Islam and the word is used by Arabic speakers of all religions.

Re: Switzerlanded or Stupid?

The other day I saw my friend onboard Swiss LX125 sitting few rows behind me. I restrained myself from shouting "Hi Jack" aloud, right at the last moment.

Was my human right trampled? Would I have caused a stir? )

Was he sitting between Hans Upp and Paula Trigger?

That would have been a hell of a flight...

My neighbour's Austrian. We always say "Gruss Gott" Get out the 'swear tin'.
Whenever I hear this I picture the Germans in uniforms with SS on their collars..., it's just what I remember from the very first movies from my childhood, and instantly I feel awkward and kind of in-danger.

German soldiers are also my first association when I hear Merkel speaking; the actors from WWII movies must have been from her region in DDR.
I automatically get alerted when somebody utters "achtung" or "schneller" with that pronunciation.

Even so, some Muslims try to prevent Christians in their country from using "Allah" with reference to their god.

Pronunciation plays a key role in spoken communication but I almost always read "Gruss Gott" as bad message at first impression. "Guten Tag" or "Tag" sounds as a frank greeting but "Gruss Gott" is bit like "You're going to see heaven pretty soon"...

Careful there, Tom. There's no real proof except that he was probably killed by a bisexual man. Bob Crane had many, many affairs with women which he proudly filmed so I believe labeling him "gay" is stretching it a bit.

I think we can get that you are quite anti Merkle and her politics, but I really don’t see the similarities between her and the Third Reich in politics, vocal expression, rehtoric of hate or any way whatsoever that you imply but nice one for trolling attempt

Re: Switzerlanded or Stupid?

It is not about Merkel, but about the language.
My late physics professor at a college pronounced the v letter in the French way and not in the otherwise accepted German way of pronouncing it. And once, unprompted, explained that it is because of the German atrocities committed in Cracow.
When you visit as a young teenager a death camp with "ARBEIT MACHT FREI" over its gate, it sticks in your mind as the first words and sentence ever of German.
