Received my first package shopped from abroad in 2019, with new laws in place

Hi,

As there are multiple varying opinions about what the new VAT laws mean for us the consumers, I thought it is a good idea to start a separate thread writing about first-hand experiences of receiving items from abroad in 2019, to see what one should expect and whether anything has changed. All contributions are welcome.

So this first item is a book I ordered in early January kind of just to see how it is processed! It arrived from USA in my mailbox, without any invitation to the Post office, or a VAT bill to pay, so far. The price plus posting was below the (previous?) threshold. There is still a chance I receive the bill later (happened once), so I'll update if that happens. However, so far things to be similar to how they were before.

Re: Received my first package shopped from abroad in 2019, with new laws in place

I have received electronic components, spare parts, documents etc. no changes at all. But then I think you are missing the point a bit.

The big change is in how vendors must collect and account for Swiss VAT and those changes only impact large vendors such as Amazon. In cases where you are dealing with small individual vendors the old process still applies.

The threshold is still the same.

Yes, I read that in another thread (by you?). But there are so many contrasting views and claims such as one cannot order from abroad anymore, that I decided to try myself.

There are people who know the rules, and people who just spread opinions, just ignore the second group or read the rules yourself.

Which is absurd, of couse you can.

The problem is that companies such as Amazon can't be arsed to comply with the new regs, so will no longer ship to Switzerland.

Not on the amazon.com site anymore. They stopped shipping to Switzerland on 1st January this year.

I have received several things from overseas since the beginning of January and nothing has changed for me.

Yes, there was an article about it back in December right?

Yet on the US amazon website there are new shipping rates specifically for Switzerland!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...deId=202075890

Also I have seen you can still buy things. I have popped things in the basket and gone all the way through to the checkout, putting a Swiss address for invoicing and delivery and it is still doable. So maybe the changes are not so drastic as what was made out in the press articles.

I read it in 20 Minuten, but I've learnt over time not take their articles too literally.

There was a email sent from amazon themselves back in December.

I don’t read 20 minutes.

Yet clearly this is contradicted by what is displayed on the website itself now.

Try going through checkout with a non-digital item shipping to Switzerland and see what happens.
They clearly need to update their website to incorporate the changes.
I would post a photo but I need to resize it first and I can’t be bothered now.

Will have to try. Just back on there and the item is no longer in the fllipping basket (or cart as they call it) and now I can't remember what it was. It was definitely non-digital as I'm stuck in the 90s for most things.

I tried with paperback books and got the message once I tried to place the order.

Who said you cannot order from abroad anymore? That's just a silly thing to say.

Some vendors will not sell to Switzerland anymore (until they figure out the rules/ implications?). But that's not the same thing. And in any case, there were already plenty of vendors that didn't sell to Switzerland before this change.

And most won't implement the changes in any case as they are either too small for the rule or it is impossible for Swiss customs to know their turnover. We've had stuff delivered from abroad to a Swiss post box this month and nothing has changed.

Already discussed above.
I tried last week and it was still letting stuff through. The fact that they have a section for shipping rates to Switzerland also confuses the issue.
