Make babies.

Seriously, more than an hour in the evening in the winter is too long. Good luck.

Re: No eletricity

Happened a few weeks ago in my community. We went for a walk around the boundaries to ascertain the extent. The only other people we met on the streets were also Brits. It was kind of cool, as we were overlooking the town when the lights came on, to a faint cheer.

Most people apparently stayed in with candles or their mobile phone torches.

In our neck of the woods in northern Michigan, power outages are very frequent and often very long. Practically every house has a generator. It's a mere miracle that we got through the two recent cold spells without long blackouts.

In just a few years in Michigan I've experienced at the very least 30 times as many power outages as in more than 60 years in Switzerland, and probably 150 times as long.

Re: No eletricity

I have not experienced a power cut of note in the last 45 years or so. Back then I was 7 or 8 and going to school in the West Of Ireland.

I can’t remember why, but for some reason or other we experienced rolling blackouts. But we were no as dependent on electricity in those days.

- Most houses had only got electricity in the 50s, so the oil lamps were still around. I remember doing my school work on the kitchen table by the light of the lamp.

- Irish TV only operated from about 17:00 to about 23:00 and the ability of the BBC to broadcast into the west of Ireland did not exist. Listen to the ‘wireless’ (battery operated radio) was the order of the day.

- We had neither a fridge nor a freezer, so worrying about food going off was an unknown concept. Milk was stored in the cooler, butter was salted and meat was stored in wooden barrels packed with salt.

- The old tradition of story telling around the fire over mugs of tea was revived and we got to know many of our neighbors much better from the nightly visits.

For a few weeks we got to experience life as our parents did when they were growing up....
