Why is my health insurance suddenly sky high?

I know this questions sounds mundane, as insurance rates climb yearly, but in contrast to last year, I must pay 80.- chf more this year, and I find this odd.

Is there anyway I can ask for reduction without changing another health care provider, or at least find the real cause?

I haven't been to the dr much and I find this a bit strange.

I am with group mutuel btw

Is this a change to your basic or supplementary policy?

Not quite sure what that means, but additional charges are applied to the monthly payment I must make in favor of the insurer, in this case: Group Mutuel.

Isnít it just the annual increase? An 80chf a month increase compared to the previous year isnít unusual.

I've had much larger increases.
It's normal.

You have the option to change to other health care providers before-hand, and will need to inform yourself of this - a right of living in Switzerland.

I believe there are many threads on EF which explain how, and the deadline needed before any switch.

It's your age that makes the difference.
Mine jumped ahead too for the same reason.
It will continue to increase at every age milestone.

Age only makes a difference for the supplementary insurance.

For basic insurance there are only three age groups. They are child, young adult and adult so once you reach the adult premiums at age 26 there are no more age related changes to premiums.

Re: Why is my health insurance suddenly sky high?

You must have had a letter some months ago stating the new amount and why they did so (I got one so assume it a default policy for all their clients), if not or you missed it, just give them a call or walk into one of their offices. I am also with group mutuel and my new price for their basic insurance in 2019 is nowhere near 80,- a month extra. We can't answer why they charge you more.

Nope not true.. a 30 year old pays much less than a 70 year old for basic insurance.

My son (in his twenties) and I both have the same insurance, exactly the same policies.
I pay 556 CHF for myself, I pay 447 CHF for him.

Swica say that at least for hospital cover, the premiums can be based on the age you joined. https://www.swica.ch/en/for-private-...lussaltertarif

Are you sure? 80.- chf increase every year, would mean in 10 years, I will have 800.- chf increase.

Is there a easy read somewhere to read about the monthly payment and yearly one?

Weíre also with Group Mutuel and ours went up about 10chf per month this year.

The amount of the increase varies widely depending on where you live and the insurance company.

It is absolutely true. There are only 3 age bands for basic health insurance and a 30 year old would pay exactly the same as a 70 year old if they lived in the same place.

Is that the basic cover for you and your son? Is he aged between 19 and 25?

Hospital cover is part of supplemental insurance not basic so they can set their own rules for that.

Did you receive some kind of notice that the premium was going up? I find it hard to believe OP had no idea it was coming. Usually the premiums for the new year come out around Oct/Nov, and then you have a chance to cancel and choose another company.

I think that women of childbearing age pay more than men. At least that's what it was when I first moved here. Mr Wishes and I are not 40 years apart in age, but my basic insurance rate was/is more than his.

Yes, we received the notification of the increased premiums in Oct/Nov just like we do every year and we checked for alternatives.
Iíd be very surprised if the OP didnít receive any notification at all.

The basic premiums have always been identical for my husband and myself.
He pays more for the supplemental that I do because he is in a different age bracket.

Basic, compulsory insurance costs are not dependent on age after age 26. Any hospital cover is part of a supplementary plan and cost is age dependent.

Depends on the canton.

Here, it's the same 26 or 76. (goes up after 18, and again after 25).

Basic is governed by federal law. If the price of your insurance varies with age, itís supplemental.

But is totally avoidable by switching. I can't imagine someone wants to pay 1'000 francs a year more.

Nobody in their right mind would choose to do that if it could be avoided.

The only way we could save a little bit of money in the premiums would be if we switched to assura but given their reputation we decided it wasnít worth it for the small amount we would save.
