These are two different points. Arguing for improvement based on its own merit is distinct from using how it's done elsewhere as reason for change.
This.

Furthermore you can rationalise virtually everything using that rationale. You know, capital punishment, hacking off limbs for relativeley small crimes, controlling women as if they're imbeciles, slavery, leave people to rot in the streets, etc. pp. All that is done elsewhere or has been done elsewhen and is (according to your line of reasoning) therefor better.
and you ruined it!
This is neither a rational nor a logical inperpretation of what Helm wrote.

I disagree. "wie sich's ghöört" is soooo Swiss. Just like "das macht me eifach nöd!".
LOL, I always thought "who cares about 'man'" when I heard it. Still do.

I'm more the "wer tut denn so was?" type when flabbergasted. At least it leaves room for an explanation (which I can't think of myself, no matter how hard I try ).

I'm not trying to paraphrase her, I'm trying to demonstrate the invalidity of her line of arguing.

I'd agree that my examples are absurd. However that's not because of what I picked, they are because the underlying line of arguing is.

("wie sich's ghöört" sounds wrong to me in SG. Like "Männer" as the plural form of "Maa" [Mann], both feel wrong. AFAIA the latter is a very recent development. For what it's worth it shows my Swiss German is different from today's young. The same may apply to the former.)

C'est le ton qui fait la musique. See OP for one of the phrases that should be avoided.

But yes, critique from an Eastern European, as I'm assuming yacek is based on the nick, may provoke a different reaction than the same comment from a western European, let alone a Swiss. What's news?
I don't know, it might. Who knows. Who cares. It shouldn't count in a professional setting though. It's counterproductive. (luckily not so many people are unable to accept this type of criticism)

Btw, I think OP has mentioned somewhere he's British?

In times of twitter nobody will listen to all of this. If you're lucky you get to "macht mer eifach nööd".

This makes me feel both a little sad for you, and want to commend you on asking about it.

I agree with many other posters here: yes, I have been told to go back to my country, but no, it is not at all common in my life in Switzerland.

When I was relatively new here and mentioned at work that I didn't like the way people treated me, my Swiss manager was surprised, and offered to come out for a walk with me. We separated, so she could observe my interactions, and thereafter she was able to offer me some frank criticism of my behaviour. All of the things she'd noticed would have been normal, friendly, polite or polite-enough behaviour where I'd grown up, but some, she explained to me, were not tge right manner(s) here. Her criticism must have been accurate, and my subsequent slight modifications, too, since the issues quickly stopped.

Perhaps you could find someone local (whom you know and trust to give you honest feedback) who would be prepared to watch you interacting "out there in real life" and tell you honestly if you are perhaps inadvertently pressing local people's buttons, as it were, provoking a negative reaction. Good luck!

Your boss was very sweet. Not many people would offer themselves volunteers for this type of experiment. Maybe would be sufficient to just ask some local friends, colleagues etc about how things are done here if one is not sure or notices some weird reactions. People are not absurd, most can accept a bit of peculiarity. Not too much though....a bit... :-)

Taking things way too literally comes with being here for a very very long time

Tom probably imagines Hello Kitty in the lake.
