Heavy wind warning alert

Just been receiving a barrage of weather warnings through, effective 9am tomorrow through to midday Thursday. Our bit of Kanton Schwyz expecting up to 160km hour winds. A quick check of various Swiss and EU meteo sites seem to concur, although other sites have nothing at all. The sites relaying warnings, have them applying for various bits of Switzerland, so you folks might want to do your own checks, and contemplate "battening down the hatches". :)

Oooops, I was gonna go to Germany tomorrow. 160 km/h is a bit much when I think of the forest I need to cross on my way. Hmmm .... it's not that what I gotta do can't wait a few more days ...

It's a Föhn that's coming. Unlikely to make it as far as Germany. Oh and max 120 Km/h they say.

Hasn't started properly yet. Should build up over the next hours, peaking overnight.

Hasn't been as windless as now for days around here, not a single leaf is moving. LOL.

Saw this post. Went outside in the night to put everything properly in place so it doesn't end up on the street. Warned the husband and the neighbour upstairs.

Was checking outside the whole day to see if it gets bad.

Sunshine. Blue skies. Not a tree moving.

Finally check the map. Oh... The storm in the south for a change... :msnblush:

Same. Scuttled about last night, fastening down anything that had now emerged from the snow and could be moved. Today, blue skies, dead calm. Oh well. At least we got a couple of outstanding jobs done in the process (fitting the shutter locks that we've been procrastinating about for 2 years, and fastening down the new wood storage rack that we didn't get to complete before the winter snow!)

If people want, you can sign up for local weather warnings by email at http://www.meteocentrale.ch/en/weather/severe-weather-switzerland/mailservice.html and it works off your postcode, ie you won't get a warning if it's windy in Geneva if you're in Zurich etc.

I use it and it predicts about 5 out of 3 storms, you get the alert and the reality isn't so bad but better to be warned etc.

It predicts more storms than there are?

The meteosuisse app does the same for your selected towns.

Well they didn't. In the areas forecast (basically the usual Föhn valleys) there was a rather nasty Föhn storm from yesterday afternoon until the wee small hours of last night. Did quite a bit of damage around here.

Those of you in Zürich - you were never in the warning area in the first place.

Edit - peak wind speed 183 Km/h. https://www.tagblatt.ch/newsticker/s...eiz-ld.1099955

It was wild up here. First job when I get home: stow all the shutters again.

Sounds like you got off lightly. First job for some around here is to find them!

We're nr Hausen am Albis and our neighbours metal shutters (3m x 2.5m) got ripped off their support in the storm on Monday afternoon and were blowing around like a shirt on a washing line. Needless to say their shutters are destroyed plus their window is scratched so badly it will need to be replaced. Due to the design and position of the house they'll need a crane to bring in the new window! This is where you're thankful for the Gebaude Versicherung....

Rather bizarrely our balcony furniture didn't move an inch....

its got to be the worst May weather that I have seen in 20 years. Got to be connected to Global ( climate ) warming.

At least we didn't have that dump of yellow pollen. (Unless that's yet to come. Is it?)
