Ku Klux Klan in Kanton Schwyz

After the Faschnacht in Brunnen.

Not really sure that a KKK march is in the spirit of Fasnacht, especially as those taking part appeared to have neo-Nazi links.

Isn't it "Ku Klux Klan"?

Klux Klux Klan sounds like it's something to do with chickens... :D

Ah, the lack of political correctness in our youth. Were those costumes in bad taste? In my opinion, yes. Should those costumes be banned? I'm on the fence about that one.

Any group of individuals who only feel brave enough to march etc whilst covering their faces should take a good look at thems... wait. Problematic.

Honestly? Outrageous. Especially as the article seems to suggest it's all done in the spirit of Fastnacht hi jinks. I mean, it's all fun and games until someone gets lynched. The scamps.

Really? Would you say the same if they were wearing the SS uniform?

Even Prince Harry succumbed to poor judgement at one point in his life.

It keeps getting drummed into me that Switzerland is not a nanny-state and there's self-regulation so banning such things is not required.

Perhaps these people should exercise a bit more self-control in what they choose to wear and perhaps consider whom they might be offending?

I'm not sure you understand the phrase "political correctness".

How about a group with beards, wearing black robes, and carrying ISIS flags and swords?

I can't be bothered to plough through the article. So what's the gist of it: are they actual klansmen or just Swiss kids dressed in KKK costumes?

I was thinking in terms of a Swiss and not of an American when I wrote that. In America, the consequences of wearing such costumes are, of course, far greater than in Switzerland.

While I was participating in a parade in Küssnacht am Rigi, the float in front of our group depicted a casino raising money for the disgraced local priest, who was dismissed from his position due to gambling debts. He was a popular Catholic priest and the church, despite knowing of his addiction, allowed him full control of his own budget and expenses. I'm of firm conviction that the church had let him down.

Anway, I asked the casino group if they didn't find their motto in poor taste, especially since the priest was well-liked and had a disease. They just laughed and drank more beer. I ended up showing them how to shuffle cards and act as black jack dealers. I couldn't help noticing the irony of their lack of casino skills while poking fun at the local priest.

That's fasnacht for you.

The article basically explained the historical significance of the costumes and then summed up the action by saying that since it was done in the spirit of fasnacht (despite its poor taste), it's not punishable by law.

They're obviously not actual klansmen. It's not clear whether they are adults or younger people and whether they belong to one of the many Schwyzer extreme right-wing organisations including the Brigade 8 Schwyz, the National Action Front (NAF) and the Kamerattschaft Heimattreu or they just have a poor sense of what would make a good theme for a parade.

Or it was done intentionally at Fasnacht as that was the only time of the year when they could 'get away with it' without getting punished by law.

Maybe it is just me but I am not sure "lack of political correctness" and "poor judgement" is quite the same...

Exactly!

Wonder if that would be deemed to be "lack of political correctness" or likened to Prince Harry or Allo Allo! I very much doubt it.

So that's ok, then.

Whatever happened to context? I know some daft buggers who object to children wearing feathered headdresses, like anyone is going to confuse the kids with accomplished native American elders.

I despair.

To be fair, DB, I understand Tom's concern. There are a lot of kids in the Innerschwyz who could be labelled "racists" since they feel threatened by anything foreign (as do their parents as well) so there may be a grain of "superior" demonstration in their costumes.

Sure, but having racist opinions is still legal, and since they're not actual klansmen I don't see what the problem is.

I bet they're loving the outrage.
