Re: Approached by a lady for help, could it have been genuine

Was approached last week in a more rural area outside Zürich (near the train station) by a women, about 45-50yrs. Asked me straight away if I needed a Putzfrau. She looked like she was coming from Eastern Europe too, her German seemed (from the few sentences) quite ok.

Since I was in a hurry, I didn't really bothered to answer much, after hearing she was looking for a job as Putzfrau.. reading this here, I suspect some kind of scam indeed, and them probably moving to more rural places (since everyone in the city knows the scam already?)

Definitely not so common here in Zurich, on the other hand the one described by smackerjack is the standard situation of Italian train stations, supermarkets, parking lots and many other public locations.
To be honest, I find the situation in Zurich comparable to city centre Manchester.

There's one guy who I used to see in the mornings at ZHB at the Sihlquai end of the underground platforms, who approached me in English with a slight American accent. He came running down the platform shouting "Excuse me" so I looked up (mistake). He claimed to have forgotten his train pass and needed just 2CHF more to return home and get his pass. I thought nothing of it until I saw him do the same trick a few weeks later.

Con men come in all shapes and sizes, but the proper ones are usually sitting behind a desk.

I was today approached close to Letzipark by a lady who asked if I need a Putzfrau. Then she asked if I can offer her financial help, that she is from Kosovo, has 3 children, without papers, stays with a family nearby and needs to pay them. She had approached also another lady before me.

I was a bit put off as I am from the region and she did not look like from there nor was her accent. Could be a gipsy maybe from Kosovo. Her German was pretty decent as well.

I told her she could give me her contact data and I’d see what I could do. She said I could also buy her something. I again offered to take her contact info. She went away saying she needed help now.

While this seemed a bit weird but maybe she was just scared....

What do you think what are the chances she really did need help? I guess if that is the case she is likely to be around next days as well...
There's one born every minute...

These are so obviously scams that every time I see someone ask about it I can only shake my head in wonder.

The one that I met asking for money was in Höngg. Well dressed but no German. Italian speaking but I doubt that she came from Italy. Strange that they come into the outlying areas of Zürich. But thats what it is with these organized "criminal tourists". They go to outlying quieter areas and do alot of housebreakings amongst other things.

I hope you realize the irony that omtstats post was at least vaguely sensible, and that yours makes you look, as usual, absolutely thick as mince.
Well thanks for your sensible comment. And what I stated are facts not fantasy.

Re: Approached by a lady for help, could it have been genuine

I share mine that happened the other day on the outskirts of Zurich: at a self service petrol station, a guy with a Romanian plated mini van is trying to put a 5 euro note in the only machine as I arrive. Proceeds to ask me to pay for his petrol because the machine does not take his note with accompanying sob story.

No doubt all these people are poorer than they would like to be, but being pressured into giving does not sit comfortably with me.

Not really a common occurrence where I live in the German part, in fact surprisingly....rare. Hardly a problem. Some try their luck but you can easily ignore them. The "regular" beggars are usually locals with drugs or mental issues.

Such organized begging maybe not so common ( in Zürich ). But it's the tip of the iceberg

I've seen it a fair bit in the city. The usual backstory where they've "run out of money" or "lost their wallet" or whatever and could you kindly pay for their parking/lunch/tram ticket.

My go-to answer is "sorry, I'm in a hurry and I don't have any money on me" and walk off. A couple of times I've been approached by either a couple or a threesome where one has been the talker and the other two stand really close, so that really sets alarm bells ringing.

Although, if they are trying to pilfer my purse, good luck to them - it's a massive purse and only just squeezes into an inner pocket in my handbag and needs more than a little coaxing to extract it.

Re: Approached by a lady for help, could it have been genuine

an old swiss woman approached me today at Limmatplatz. She wanted to change two 2 frank coins into one 5 frank coin. I said I did not have a 5 frank coin and she said thats OK she would take what I have. I asked if she was begging and she said no and that it was an emergency. So I gave her 5 franks in return.

Re: Approached by a lady for help, could it have been genuine

I was approached twice this week. First, a young man approached me while I was sitting on the platform waiting for the train. He wanted to sell a small pot of homemade jam. He was really polite and friendly, and I almost caved because the little pot looked so cute, and I think I have seen him before.

Second, a man on the train came by and "gave" roses to all the ladies. I've seen this one before, so I left it sitting on the seat and when he came back hoping for money I handed the rose back to him.

Guess she did not want to just ask for money. She said she was not a beggar

Re: Approached by a lady for help, could it have been genuine

Once I was in Lausanne Rennes train station, waiting for the train. One young guy just came to me and asked for 2 CHF. I asked him why? And he said he wants to buy a beer And I do not know how to respond to that answer. So I gave him the 2CHF
