Sadness over Elm trees!!

Not really a complaint, just sad.
In our garden we have what is believed to be the last proper stand of elm trees in Switzerland, most others were wiped out by Dutch elm disease.

Situation is they were neglected long before we moved in.

Now they are over 80 feet tall and weigh around 5 - 8 tonnes each.

They are under both Gemeinde and Kantonal protection.

They are unfortunately growing on a steep slope, are believed to be unstable and are located west of our house so a major storm could blow them down onto our house.

Just had a very long meeting with a forester, Gemeinde representative, tree felling company, interested owners, management company, hauswart &&.

The proposal was to cut down all eleven trees due to safety concerns. Eventually we could agree a compromise to spare the three smallest trees furthest from the house, hopefully this will be OK but elms are like a family group and the loss of most of the group could cause the others to die.

The experts said that it was far too late to trim back the trees, the amount of trimming would either kill them or cause the roots to retract and so become more unstable!

We will plant new trees, but not elms, with a max fully grown weight of 2 - 3 tonnes.

We will still need a formal approval from both Gemeinde and Kanton for our compromise.

Height of over 80m?

Better have them registered as being by far the biggest elm trees ever measured on earth. Also they'd be the tallest trees known in Switzerland, a shame they are not mentioned on any site that keeps track of such records.

Re: Sadness over Elm trees!!

Compromise. Move to another house and leave the trees intact ...

Move the house away. If they did it with the Branding House they can do it with your house.

Re: Sadness over Elm trees!!

Brought back memories of school field trip to a environmental reserve in the 1970s whereby they professed that by the time we were all adults there would be no more elm trees due to Dutch Elm disease. Well I made it to adulthood with many experiences of elm trees. And I thought they had a fix on the disease, or at least a way to treat it and slow it down. Sad if they have to go and are so rare today.

Re: Sadness over Elm trees!!

Elm tree fungi apparently continue to diminish, some other fungi are winning over and killing the parasites that carry the disease. So..Elm trees, hang in there! The battle of the fungi.
