Re: Please help! I got a Zollrechnung through FedEx

Hi, Landers,

Thanks a lot. I checked, its about 300 fr for 100kg. So in proportion should be 60Fr?

VAT is based on the value, so you can back-calculate what they've valued the goods at.
Duty is based on weight.
www.tares.ch
Select the "import from" country then enter 6303 for curtains and try to find closest match to the goods. Click on the magnifying glass to see the rates. 100 on 20kg seems high to me but maybe it includes other charges.

Re: Please help! I got a Zollrechnung through FedEx

I still shake my head in sadness that when someone such as the OP asks a perfectly valid question gets groaned at (and by 2 people I know in real life). I honestly don't get it, why not just try to help them by giving them an answer or some advice?

No wonder EF is slowly dying and very few new members just don't hang around for long.

Re: Please help! I got a Zollrechnung through FedEx

Groaned because claiming that 20kg of something has a low value is basically fraud.

And apparently the customs guys view things as such.

They bill you on the value they determine to be correct, and when numbers don't match, they are NOT happy.

Also, as has been pointed out, VAT is based on value but import duty is based on other factors, including origin.

Sorry, but that's the way it works, and not just here.

Tom

Yeah, but does everyone know all this minutiae? I would guess not. So you make the assumption of fraud after reading the whole thread, or did you just assume it from the get go and groan the first post.

Customs, Zoll, Post, FedEx DO make errors as well, so it’s always worth checking.

The problem with drive by groaning is that you can make people reluctant to use the forum. Sorry, but that’s the way it works here, too.

All boxes I received of 20 or even 30Kg were worth less than 300,- Chf

For us it is the much lighter packages of 2 to 3Kg that behold the valuable items.

There simply is no direct relationship between weight and value of packages.

It's not about the value, that is only for VAT. The VAT is correct for the declared value.

Customs duty, which is the case here, depends on weight, place of origin, material, and other factors (CHF 102.90)

"Vorlageprovision 22
Eust/Import VAT 25.35
Zolle 102.9
CH Ust 7.7% 1.7"

Value including shipping was estimated as CHF 350 (see grumpygrapefruit)
That is o.k. as the declared Value was CHF 300 (If you give the tax man a range, he will clearly pick the upper limit.)
Are you sure about that? Doesn't look like it to me though of course I may be overlooking something.

OP paid 1.7 CHF VAT, which (I take it) is what's due on the 22 CHF Vorlageprovision charged by FedEx.
Einfuhrsteuer (VAT) due to the import is 25.35 CHF and implies a base value of around 330 CHF. That base includes the customs fees of 102.9 so the goods before import were valued at 226.1 CHF (give or take a bit). No?

The customs people appear to be very fine with OP's valuation.
