So is there any way to try different gins without buying a bottle of each?

Also, there was a farm in Germany not too far from the lake of constance selling home made gin, especially sloe gin. that was yummy!
Yes .. Go to a gin bar! In fact any bar that sells a variety of gin..

That's how I decide what to buy mostly.

Edit : Many will let you taste for free - Not a fancy cocktail of course, just a little shot of the raw stuff.

June, you say..
You don't need to fly to the UK to find a gin bar - Basel's Barfly has 250+ sorts. (as well as 50-odd whiskeys/ies)
And yes, you can taste whichever you would like, for free (within reason)

Re: The Gin Thread

Zurich people don't even need to go that far! Dante bar near Stauffacher / Langstr is a great gin bar, with an excellent selection (as well as cocktails and beer for non-ginners).

Re: The Gin Thread

For those who are visiting or live in the Zug region I can highly recommend the "im Hof Zug" in Zug. It is tucked away in a back corner so use Google maps to find it.

The restaurant is very popular, reservations are recommended, however the gin bar upstairs seems to be a quiet secret. Great selection of gins.

I used to go to the Widder Bar for Scotch/whisky/whiskey... They also have a pretty decent selection of gins and tonics (pgs 7-8): https://www.widderhotel.com/files/wb...e_feb_2019.pdf

Re: The Gin Thread

I went in once, mid-day, and the manager was tasting whisky's with a distributor (IIRC), and they invited me to join them and hear all about them. As I was escaping a girl's day of shopping in downtown Zurich, I was quite thrilled to not only escape, but to find myself in what could only be considered "Whisky heaven!"

So yes, my fav bar in Zurich, too!

Have you been in there since the refurb?

Pushing it close as my fav place here is the Kronenhalle Bar - that is pure class and the people working behind the bar are fantastically knowledgeable.

Re: The Gin Thread

Have not been since then, as last time I tried to go they were doing the refurb.

And your right, the Kronenhalle Bar IS also fantastic. The artwork alone, is worth the trip!

There was another divey pub down the street a bit (towards old town), that was frequented by artists and authors, but I am forgetting the name.

EDIT: The Odeon!

Re: The Gin Thread

Happy Easter to all you Gin people.

This is my favourite bottle at the moment.. and I'm with Abfab, only lemon will do.

I am going to keep an eye out for the small taster gift boxes as it would be fun to have a wee taste of all the different gin varieties available now.

So as not to clog up the other thread with our drinks..

All things gin related here.. and whiskey, whisky, brandy - whatever's your favourite tipple.

I am especially interested in gin & tonic combinations.
Any opinions on Jonnie Walker whisky. Is it " rot gut " whisky?

I don't think I have ever tried it.

The only two I drink are Jameson and Bushmills.

Re: The Gin Thread

Perhaps to calm the twinging nerves, we should have a ZH Gin meet-up? Get Loz and FMF (and anyone else welcome of course) over too and get to know one another in a nice civil environment?
