Re: The Gin Thread

I love gin with strong Wacholder note, Deux Frères is my recent favourite...

Favourite gin-tonic combinations:
Deux Frères with a sweet tonic
Monkey 47 with... anything basic
Rosy / Gin Mare with Mediterranean

Just for the fancy, sprig of rosemary and dried juniper berries to garnish

So is there any way to try different gins without buying a bottle of each?

Also, there was a farm in Germany not too far from the lake of constance selling home made gin, especially sloe gin. that was yummy!
Gin Advent Calendar! Saw them in globus and some wine stores last christmas

Any opinions on Jonnie Walker whisky. Is it " rot gut " whisky?

In case you didn't notice - by the title and the posts - this is a gin thread.

Perhaps to calm the twinging nerves, we should have a ZH Gin meet-up? Get Loz and FMF (and anyone else welcome of course) over too and get to know one another in a nice civil environment?
I think this is a brilliant idea. Gin tasting and poker evening. I'll gladly host the first one....

Who's in??

Re: The Gin Thread

Globus claim to have 500 gins from 30 countries - though they're not the cheapest in town:

https://www.globus.ch/wein-drinks/gins/gin

Also Hortus from Lidl (Own Brand Spirits Supermarket of the Year in UK) is a steal when you can find it. They also do an 'Ophir' clone which is a bit harder to find. Both variants often found in Lidl in Germany but sometimes in CH too. Hortus often comes near the top in blind taste tests...

A Gin training evening.

Tonic?

But seriously, it's good with Schweppes or Fever tree.

So, I went shopping yesterday and bought these:

Tried a Gordon's one at a friend's bbq last Summer.. but apart from that, I've never really drank cans of pre-mixed drink. Have any of you?

I blame Diane Abbott.

I had a long (ish) train journey last time I was back in the UK and obviously stocked up on a few cans from the M&S G&T range. I found that even though they were pre-mixed (and only stayed cold as long as cans of drink stay cold), that they were still most acceptable. The pink one (forget the exact composition) was rather good.

NB - you are allowed to drink on trains in the UK, just not on London transport, just in case anyone thought I was as anti-social as Abacus

Re: The Gin Thread

This one from Liechtenstein is rather nice.

Otherwise I'm usually on (in descending order of feeling of wealth) Monkey 47, Hendricks or Bombay Blue.

Mixed with Fever Tree Mediterranean by choice.

Fever Tree have a Pairing Wheel to suggest which of their tonics complements each gin best.

Has anyone tried Tonic Syrup instead of Tonic water? I came across this just yesterday and am curious to try it as we have a Sodastream at home. Plan to get a couple of bottles when in the UK over the summer but any insights before then would be great...

I've not noticed M&S ones before, will have a look.

I bought the gin cans in Tescos and they had a good range. I was sorely tempted by their £5 off Tanqueray, but thought I rather test a few before large bottle buying again.

Thanks for the useful link.. btw, do not try the Fever Tree Clementine tonic, it's horrid.

I have never heard of tonic syrup. If you do make it, let us know.. would be interesting to know what it's like.

Re: The Gin Thread

I love Gin Mare, made in Spain and suprisingly available in Lidl for only 39CHF.
You can have a look at the description in Manor:
https://www.manor.ch/de/shop/wein/sp...gaAiTOEALw_wcB

The best gin I have tried in this price range.

I second the M&S pre mixed recommendation. They do a Bramble one that's divine. Purple can.

Re: The Gin Thread

I tried the Edinburgh Gin, rhubarb and ginger can and didn't like it at all. Far too sweet, not for me.

Threw it out and made up a Bombay and Elderflower Fever Tree G&T. Much better..
