Do you still love cash?

Apparently the Swiss do

I'm a bit in-between.. I go cashless mostly because I have an abo for transport and my office restaurant uses a card system for food and coffee..

But i have a couple of big notes in my wallet too..cos you never know.

Have to because the office restaurant card only can be loaded with cash :-)

Re: Do you still love cash?

I always pay my mechanic cash, buy cars/motorcycles cash, buy/sell artwork cash, etc.

The new CHF 1000 is great!

Short answer yes, that's why I've just bought 5 new purses as backups for my current ones.

Define 'big'.

I rarely carry big notes (CHF 1000), but 100/200 notes almost always.

Re: Do you still love cash?

Yep, all this newfangled nonsence…

At the beginning of the year I took a chocolate tin, taped it shut, made a coinslit in it. All 10chf notes in my wallet this year will end up in the tin, to be opened at the end of December. Am hoping for at least 100 bills

Re: Do you still love cash?

Absolutely freaking hate physical cash.

If someone steals my wallet they're up for a big disappointment.

I pay everything with the card. It's easier to control where and how much I spent. I find paper bills disgusting. And coins are a heavy burden - I have a 1 euro coin in the car for the supermarket cart and that's it.

Entering a shop and seeing "cash only" is a bit of a personal nightmare. We all have our quirks, I guess.

Re: Do you still love cash?

What I like with cash is that hubby dumps all spare change on a little plate. Once in a while I take that all to the bank and buy something nice from that

A magic plate that periodically makes the change disappear..

Re: Do you still love cash?

I prefer not to carry more than 100chf cash unless I really think I will need it, and even then usually have max 40chf in my wallet in case of emergencies. The sooner society becomes cashless the better in my eyes.

Keeping large sums of cash in your wallet ("just in case" is just silly and inadvisable. The increased risk of losing it or getting it stolen is massively reduced by just carrying it when you actually need it and otherwise leaving it at home in a draw.

Do we have the same husband.

It actually mounts up quite nicely and I’m always pleasantly surprised when I take it to the bank.

I find it convenient and haven't yet lost it or had it stolen..

I live in a little village, the auberge and shop prefer cash, the little terraces by the lake i use a lot prefer cash, when i stop for a snack/coffee/lunch i like to leave cash and walk away instead of waiting for the server to bring the card machine.

I don't pay my big shop in the COOP with cash but for these little things cash is king for me..

Re: Do you still love cash?

I prefer cash and mostly 200 notes, though I have a nice shiny new 1,000 tucked away in case.

Problem with cards is when the machines do not work. It happens more often than you think, then I can whisk out my 200, pay and go away.

Only problem is I become an ATM as my family (my boys especially) know where the stash is hidden and make vague promises about repaying me. Yeah, and the moon is made of cheese!!!

This is no bigger risk than somebody holding a knife or a gun to your head and asking for your Bancomat codes....

You have absolutely NO IDEA what i have on my person when i walk past you in the street, i may have Chf 10.-- or i may have Chf 100'000.-- or some diamonds.

Yeah, because in Switzerland it's really likely to have a knife or especially gun held to your head and be marched to the bancomat for your "codes"...

What is statistically actually far more in Switzerland likely is loss or pickpocketing, which is what I referenced in my post. Common sense, man...

Re: Do you still love cash?

Well I'd say it's 50/50 based on my cheese shop takings. Average cash sales through the year is 52% apart from December when folk spend a lot more, last December was only 43%.

I spend mostly cash for small things, only using cards for large purchases.

Re: Do you still love cash?

You all know very well that you all have to excuse my being an old 'cash only' man but this post is very apt in that I was in the Migros in Kloten this morning and the card readers at the tills weren't functioning. The announcement came over the loud speaker system. Lots of warbling and tutting and 'I'll have to go home' sort of thing.
Then to Lidl for odds and ends - at the till the card belonging to the lady in front of me didn't react to her instructions so she had to leave a couple of shopped things lying as she didn't have sufficient cash for the total. Quite a panic ensued.
I have plenty of time and often join the longest queue just for the sake of being able to do so but give me cash or an Einzahlungsschein any day.

If anyone wants my business then on my terms. (But don't tell my sons!)
