| | Re: Missing Aunt Jemima and other food necessities | Quote: | | | | It's interesting how this kind of snobbery seems to be mostly attracted to posts by people seeking American products. I doubt a request for a viable local source of Tim Tams or Thums Up would be met with the same response.
Funny that, isn't it? | | | | | Not really. For the most part non-Aussies haven't even heard of such things, let alone tasted them.
As for salad cream, anyone who thinks it's a substitute for mayonnaise is completely missing the point. Comparing them is ridiculous. There are things where mayo is absolutely the right thing, others where it's got to be salad cream, and only rarely do the two usages overlap.

Hi OP from another American expat
Links to the American market type places have been provided on page 2, they’re handy for getting your fix of what you really want from back home (as are visits from friends and family LOL!)
Personally I love real maple syrup but then again my dad’s family is practically Canadian so that might explain things he grew up on the border in New York State near some maple farms...
Anyway you might find, like me, that the longer you’re here the more you learn to make the stuff you like. Pancakes for example, there are plenty of good recipes for mixes etc. Or you might find yourself putting Nutella or jam on your pancakes, or even switching to crêpes! It’s all an adventure...
Enjoy exploring the previously referenced markets that do sell American and British products, and take advantage of every visit to get some of te food you miss. In the meantime enjoy exploring some new recipes too, whether they be American or otherwise | The following 3 users would like to thank AnnaSophiaA for this useful post:

Also to the OP, the next time you're in Zurich city centre, have a look in the basement of Coop City on Bahnhoffstrasse. They have a wealth of wonderful things from all over the World, and now that it's coming bbq season, there's a brilliant chilli sauce place just round the corner from platform 8 of Oerlikon train station. http://www.hotsaucen.ch/ | The following 2 users would like to thank Blueangel for this useful post:

Tom, 's just condiments. Un-knot.
I like homemade mayo. I like Hellman's. I hands-down prefer salad cream.

I don’t have dressing if any kind on salads so don’t use salad cream for that but I do like it in a sandwich with egg or tuna.
Not a fan of mayonnaise at all even the made from scratch at home stuff.
