Ok, we are all talking about saving the world but I'm interested in what EF members actually do, perhaps also as an inspiration for others.

Myself: not too impressive actually: I recycle by following the Swiss system, always walk/bike to work, buy sometimes second hand stuff instead of new.
But also: produce too much waste, shower too long, don't look too much about how and were products are produced and fly regularly.

Good thread - wasted unfortunately on EF...

Re: Climate change - what do you do to save the world?

For: Don't have a car, no kids, vegetarian, don't use heaps of cleaninng products, grow some of my own veg, only buy new furniture, etc, if I can't find it in the brocki or second hand. I can't remember a time before recycling being a 'big thing'. It wasn't so government organised, but it was always there. My dad and all my grandparents made a fair effort to recycle stuff, and I used to help my nan to unravel old jumpers for the wool. OH's dad made his fortune recycling old computers to extract the metals.

Against: Fly and fart (thaks for the reminder grumpy ;)).

Re: Climate change - what do you do to save the world?

For:

Try and avoid flying too much.
We try and go by train (which is getting more difficult as Amogles mentioned as lots of overnight-train services have stopped).

If we go by car we tend to have a full car.

We use public transport or bicycles a lot.

Our car is only 1.2L.

We tend to only have one 35L rubbish sack per week (for a family of five).
We recycle as much as we can.

We don't tend to replace electronics on a whim and don't need the latest version. Our phones are old but still do the job.

We repair where possible rather than replace (down to component level on some boards).

We almost always buy Swiss meat and don't eat meat every day.

We don't buy fruit and veg that has been flown in and otherwise try to keep things seasonal (a lot easier here than in the U.K.)

We don't eat more than we need to as none of us are overweight.

Against:

Our house is not very well insulated compared with the old one.
The heating could be turned down in Winter. I'm used to draughty old English houses and like it cold. My wife likes warmer places.

I like real books rather than ebooks.

We haven't yet replaced all the lamp bulbs in our place with low energy ones.

We have children. Children who are generally wasteful of hot water etc.

I follow the recent urgent declarations of the effects of climate change on biodiversity and our ecosystems, and keep myself up-to-date on a daily basis about the recent Global declarations that this is URGENT.

My generations caused this, and it’s time that we did something to support getting us out of this climate catastrophe which is inevitable unless things change.

I’m not going into my vegetarianism, not owning a car, good recycling habits, using renewable energy wherever the transparency exists, rarely flying except once every 3 years to show my daughter what biodiversity is about etc. etc. etc., because it will be lost on most EFers.

Nor will I go into the bad examples I have set in the past, because it’s time to wake up. P.S. the groans I’m receiving on this topic only confirm ignorance on understanding one of the main political happenings that is currently happening in the World - groan as much as you like:

There is so much going on on this topic at the moment, because it’s urgent. It’s daily - just read the news and get informed. For any EFers that care:

And that’s what it comes down to folks. It’s remarkable how quickly these eco protest movements get highjacked by socialism. Watch how quickly “save the planet!” becomes “redistribute the wealth!”, “tax the rich!” and “silent the dissenter!”. Every. Single. Time.

This is what concerns me the most about “climate change”, wankers demanding higher taxes and more control over my life.

The main reason why I started this thread was that I'm fed up of preaching and focused on doing. Please do the preaching part somewhere else.

My husband always raises an eyebrow when he sees how much I can get into a 35L bag without it bursting. It's all about keeping corners and edges of packaging tucked in away from the sides... :D

Do you squish everything before it goes in the bag? We recycle whatever we can, which saves it going in the bin but everything else gets squished and flattened. I'm not paying to get rid of air. I have a reputation of being a tight-wad to maintain...

But you do that to save money . You dont do it for the climate. Using one plastic bag instead of 3 is no big deal! Its all the same weight of garbage. So reduce all this packing material of all the foods you buy. Buy loose food.Drink from the tap. Dont buy commercial soft drink crap

Family of four adults. Even when we were six adults, we still had only one 35l bag per week. Compost and recycling. Rarely throw out food, often eat leftovers. Use public transport a great deal.

But that's not "saving the world". That's just saving money and not wasting stuff.

That's the Swiss way.

Or they cram it into the bins at the supermarket.

Err.. thanks for the tips...:msnsarcastic:

Of course I do it to save money AS WELL AS the environment. I recycle whatever can be recycled and I bin what can't. I was just pointing out that I am a dab hand at stuffing a bin-bag. Not one for the CV but probably fits into this thread.

Actually, I'm not a fan of soft drinks or fizz so inadvertently save the planet from that perspective, and I'm suspicious of prepacked veg and fruit because you don't know how it is on the side you can't see so, again, I inadvertently save the planet by buying loose.

I'm not an eco-warrior, I just like to avoid being a wasteful moron.

what would the german/french name be for a machine which chops up everything into small pieces which would then fit nicely in a garbage bag?
