Climate change - what do you do to save the world?

Inspired by this thread: https://www.englishforum.ch/swiss-po...y-visible.html

Ok, we are all talking about saving the world but I'm interested in what EF members actually do, perhaps also as an inspiration for others.

Myself: not too impressive actually: I recycle by following the Swiss system, always walk/bike to work, buy sometimes second hand stuff instead of new.
But also: produce too much waste, shower too long, don't look too much about how and were products are produced and fly regularly.

I only drink water from the tap and refill my plastic bottle that I have been using for 1 month. Time for a recycle of this bottle.Always drink loose tea. Never a tea bag.

Re: Climate change - what do you do to save the world?

That's a great thread and a good question:

What I do for the environment:
recycle according to the Swiss system, don't use paper towels (the amount of garbage decreased significantly), don't use any chemicals to clean the house (water, vinegar, baking soda and lemon in most cases do the job), don't use the tumbler (in winter I hang the clothes in the common drying room, in summer on a drying rack on my balcony), decrease the amount of meat (we eat meat 3-4 times per month and it's usually poultry or fish), try to buy bio products, walk and use pubic transportation as much as I can (not owning a car helps a lot), take a short shower, try to "give the things the second life" (for example give away the books, clothes instead of throwing them away), don't use plastic bags (when I buy vegetables I take a net bag with me), don't use film foil...

What I do against the environment:
drink sparkling water (and generate a lot of plastic bottles!), still eat meat and diary products (and honestly I can't imagine becoming a vegan), still drink tea in bags (but I'm working on that), fly (being an expat with family in remote countries and continents doesn't help at all).

I'm sure I have more sins against the nature that's why I'd love to know what other people do to save the planet!

Ticino doesn't have an overpopulation problem like the north, and we have an energy surplus, all of which is green.

Re: Climate change - what do you do to save the world?

My house is frankly shocking in terms of saving the planet... I tried, i continue to try but the rest of the family just don't join in.

We do put glass bottles in recycling mostly. and big cartons too .
But the general rule of thumb in my place is that if it fits in the tax bag, it goes in there.. Yeah paper, PET, glass, ALU, food.. You name it, we keep the incinerator running for your electricity.
Usually I go home from work and find all of the lights on, in broad daylight, and nobody is home, TV is usually on too.

I rarely use the car right enough, except big shopping or actual trips.. I much prefer to walk or bus..
However the other half usually drives the kids to school, 300m away.

Re: Climate change - what do you do to save the world?

For:
No kids, no car (mobility use once a month though), recycle almost everything possible (a 17L taxed back lasts me at least 1 week), eat very little meat, live in a well insulated apartment - only 1 radiator needed through the winter.

Against:
Fly within Europe once a month, import food products from the UK commercially, sometimes fart.

Re: Climate change - what do you do to save the world?

I don’t own a car. Most of my furniture is second hand or antique. I recycle as much as possible. Most bills etc I handle online and don’t have paper copies sent to me. The banks, utilities etc are good with that but unfortunately dentists etc still don’t get it. I also read my favorite newspapers online. I buy bio food as much as possible and buy as much local and seasonal stuff as possible. I also grow some of my own. I don’t have a lawn mower but use a scythe.

Contra, I do Travel a lot. I take the train if possible but lots of overnight trains have benn eliminated over the last years by the very same governments who moan about the climate change thing. So lots of places I used to catch the train to are now only reachable by plane if I don’t want to spend two days traveling.

And despite all I do, i am sceptical about the whole climate change panic. My philosophy is more about conserving resources, which on my view is by far the bigger problem.

Re: Climate change - what do you do to save the world?

Educate yourselves.

Why not read and learn about how the brain deceives us all. And it does it in ways you would not believe.

The problem is the brain/mind has not caught up with modern life.

And until the brain/mind does catch up, or until we can modify ourselves in some other way, we have to accept that things are not going to change for a long long time...

And that is why the intellectual Elite favor population reduction. And I am sure it will be done in the most vicious way imaginable.

Thankyou all...

Re: Climate change - what do you do to save the world?

Dedicated recyclers of just about everything & anything possible. We bring our own bags like most Suisse to the markets and avoid plastic as much as possible (particularly in packaging).

Try to buy 2nd hand when feasible else we donate 2nd hand items in acceptable condition

Drive hybrid technology automobiles and next auto will absolutely be something electric but we've generally tried to minimize our fossil fuel dependence wherever possible (No gas mower or trimmer).

We don't buy bottled water and even at work I use my own container. We buy bio whenever possible - never have bought anything other than Suisse meat or poultry here. A good deal of our produce or meat is purchased from local farmers & butchers and this has been the case for a number of years now. In general, we have definitely reduced our carnivorous tendencies and eat more vegetarian dishes.

I've nearly given up sushi altogether which has long been my favorite meal to eat but it's almost completely off my radar now - from several times a month back in the US to once in a year, if I am lucky. I do miss Hamachi though

We have a very energy efficient home with solar panels to heat water, geothermal energy and minimize our electrical consumption. We too minimize paper use

I change the oil in our cars myself and also recycle this used oil

Against: Definitely the cars but we hope to improve this in the coming year or so. Probably not unplugging electronics when not in use or fully charged, often enough

Generally speaking though, I'm quite pleased with our efforts and perhaps more importantly our two kids have learned respect for this as well
