Littering in Switzerland. Is it getting worse?

The first time I visited Zurich was about 20 years ago.

I have the impression that in the last years, littering has become much more of a problem, especially amongst younger people.

Am I right or I am looking at it through rose tinted spectacles and in fact, it was always like that?

I really hate littering and whenever I see people doing it, I find it really hard to understand.

I hope not, coming from the Netherlands some years ago I considered Switzerland such a clean country, not perfect. But here I could take a walk in the forest without playing "kick the can" the whole time.

I especially mean in the cities.

Personally, I would vote for a zero tolerance approach!

Re: Littering in Switzerland. Is it getting worse?

We live on the edge of town next to a forest and I can for sure say when I see empty packs of cigarettes and red bull cans on the ground in the forest I get a bit upset. How difficult is it to carry to the next garbage can? It's definitely the younger generation in my opinion as I don't see many past 35-40 drinking the red bull.

Can't blame a generation without looking also at the generation that raised them.

Especially as it's the generation that raised them who are fly-tipping in neighbouring countries.

I see a lot of McDonald wrappers discarded by the side of the road here.

There's probably a bit of truth in that, however unsavoury it sounds. Switzerland didn't get it's clean image for no reason. I do think some other cultures have a different attitude to litter and that may be gaining hold here - perhaps by peer association.

That's exactly what I wanted to express myself, but I put it in other words.

Doubters have to stand in the street and do statistics, who throw away and not the garbage. It would be a big surprise. I see some of you just tease here.

Well... 14th century, don't think there was much waste (and for certain no candy wrapping or soda cans) and the little waste they had they just threw on a pile somewhere out of sight or burned it.

Well I dont see too much littering in Zürich. Apart from all this cigarette shit that pollutes every bus stop and train station. And that's not limited to non-swiss

Maybe more prolific in bigger cities. In Zug and the surrounding suburbs, I don't recall this being 'a thing'

That said, the motorised street cleaners are out all the time.

It is true, Zug is way cleaner by comparison.

Zug is a town. Not to be compared to Zurich.

I have the same impression. However, according to the ERZ in Zürich, the amount of rubbish (measured by weight) that is collected has remained constant (at least over the past 5 years). What apparently changed is the volume of rubbish, e.g. more salad- and pizza-boxes. So this might explain why the same kg amount of rubbish appears to be bigger.

Also, Zürich will change their public garbage bins for ones that have a bigger opening (kind of sad, I liked the old design).
