Church for confession?

Hello all.

I am an Orthodox but I need to go to Catholic church to confess. I know that is unusual but it makes sense for me the need to confess and I really need info if such thing is possible and where.

Re: Church for confession?

In general, Orthodox Christians also go through the same procedures as catholics in terms of confession. You just need to go to your local Orthodox church and get on with it. The priest will be able to help.

You should be able to confess in any catholic church too (most have the time tables of when a priest is available for confession in one of their booths), but the whole procedure is different (for one the catholics confess to the priest, the Orthodox confess to God with a priest as a witness). So, it might be the same God, but the bureaucratic procedures to reach It are slightly different.

Not sure why an Orthodox would *need* to confess the Catholic way, but hei, I'm off organised religion anyway...

Just confess here.

Re: Church for confession?

Here a map of a Orthodox churches in Switzerland https://orthodoxie.ch/en/english/map/
In Lausanne there is a Greek, a Romanian, a Serbian, and a Francophone Orthodox Church.

If you still want to go to a Catholic church:
- It is normally the church with a cross on the top.
- In Lausanne the big cathedral is Catholic.
- Confession times might be limited (German: Beichtgelegenheit)
- There are anonymous confessions (in the booth) and one-to-one confessions
- Not all churches have booths for an anonymous confession.

I'd have thought needing to go to a church to confess would be sufficient.

Re: Church for confession?

It's all a dim and distant memory but.. I think... you can't receive absolution unless you've been through a catholic confirmation ceremony.

i.e. You can 'confess' but the priest can't absolve you of your sins, so you're only confessing.. which, as the wits above say.. you could do here.. or to a stranger

Ah you did not pay enough attention to the exceptions.... and it would appear the OP is one of those exceptions.

Also distant. But as far as I can remember we had to "confess" before we received our first communion (Seems to be a precondition to receive the Holy Communion see Code of Cannon Law 916 ). Considering that my parents knew all my major misdeeds, I did not really see the point in doing so again do a stranger (priest).

Further reading the Canon it seems the only precondition for Penance/Confession is to be baptized/be a Christ. It also says in Can. 991 that a Roman Catholic is allowed to confess to priest of any other rite.

Re: Church for confession?

Ha... that cheered me up on a dull afternoon. At a personal level I can't buy into any of it anymore.. but still, the smell of incense.. the drone of plainsong.. the costume drama.. and the exhaustive set of rules only slightly less daft than that of the average golf club

THE PENITENT

Can. 987 To receive the salvific remedy of the sacrament of penance, a member of the Christian faithful must be disposed in such a way that, rejecting sins committed and having a purpose of amendment, the person is turned back to God.

So... yes.. you just have to be a 'good Christian' to receive 'salvific remedy'

In our class (about 7 or 8), we had identical twins, who used to have a wee conference before confession to ensure the both told the same sins.... the Priest asked them one day why they were talking in church: We're just making sure we get the sins right!!!
