100% myth - saunas, cold pools & showers all help to build immunity and reduce inflammation.

I do get sick when there is only warm stifled air around...my favorite is when the Swiss claim their kidneys are affected by a cool breeze. Major eye roll!

Is your "100% myth" response in answer to Jacek's 'little old lady' belief that changes in temperature make you ill or that saunas, cold pools & showers build immunity?

It's not clear, especially when the replies are considered.

There's scientific, measurable evidence, that lowering the body temperature quickly produces more white blood cells which increase immunity.

Anecdotally, I have a hot, then icy cold shower every morning and I've only been to the doctor's once in fifteen years.
I think you guys are giving me Alpine arthritis from reading your responses.

No A/C in the office but a fan pointed at me is blowing a gentle cool air.

Zürich is 33C, but relatively comfortable (pulled down shutters having aired well since 4:00, closed shutters at 10:30 as it was 21C). Now sitting in the dark - no lights, only warmth coming from laptop...

But we have the old, thick walls from 100 years ago, and this keeps cool.
Will get out the Dysson ventilator only if needed.

Playing tennis tomorrow at 8:00, followed by a swim in the Zurisee, then will retreat again into my layer...

Apologies for not being more clear. My response was in reference to the Jacek’s claim that air conditioning etc. can make you ill. It’s been a constant battle for me since moving here as it’s simply not true.

Re: next week will be freaking hot, according to MeteoSuisse

34 degrees up here. Just back from picking up the older two at village playgroup... it's a dilemma, do I wear the toddler (he runs hot, might as well wrap a 13kg woodstove onto my back) or let him walk at his snaily-slow pace and be out for an extra 45 minutes?

This afternoon Option Woodstove won out. Mostly because I was hoping he'd sleep. Of course he did no such thing... UNTIL we were back indoors. I was actually in the middle of unwrapping to put him down, when zoink goes the head over to one side. Flat out.

Somehow managed to scoot him down off my back without waking him... he's asleep now on the couch and I'm about to head into the kitchen for a yogurt and a tell-me-about-your-day with the other two.

It's a very cuddly sort of workout though and they're my favorite sort.

Q: What's the easiest way to carry a 17kg preschooler?
A: Give birth to a 3kg baby and pick him up every day.

17???? Wow. I am envious. I gotta calculate every meal if it's got enough calories in order to maintain our weights. It is tiring. Wish there were people around who like to eat.

He looks very cuddly. And I bet he makes a great heat pad in the winter!

Re: next week will be freaking hot, according to MeteoSuisse

Btw, I just read a pretend salary calculation for SAHM back home, and it is about a highschool director worth, looks like.

There have been also recomendations for what is an employer obligated to provide, during heat waves.

I hope moms are keeping cool and are napping with babies. It isn't easy to keep babies not overheating.

It's not nearly as simple as insulation though. Our old house has small south-facing windows and even smaller north-facing ones (and none ever, ever opposite each other - heaven forbid we should catch a cross breeze! - always a door or three between), low ceilings, a chopped up floor plan with doors, doors everywhere - and all topped off with a lovely sunlight-absorbing sheet metal roof.

Insulation or not, this is a house built for surviving the winter, pure and simple. If you were building with an eye to hot summers you'd do basically the opposite.
Exactly.

The long sought-after vision of the house in the Country or similar that so proliferates in the UK, is just rubbish today. Re-sale value will probably be a fraction, potentially covering the costs of the land.

If you want to do it properly, you have to be prepared to invest:

There are always viruses running around, but I'd be more inclined to blame the heat this week. Perhaps your daughter overheats easily?

I have always overheated quickly to the point of headache, vomiting, etc. since I was a child. Since I know this, I can take steps to avoid heat stroke.

It's important for her (okay, all of us) to stay hydrated when it's this hot. If she starts to feel overheated teach her to find a way to dunk herself in cold water. Even if it's just the head getting a good soak under the tap it can help. I do that at work sometimes and I don't care if people look at me funny. It's better than being hauled to the emergency department. As a child, my mum put me clothes and all under the cold water shower.

17 is his big brother, little guy is "only" about 12-13. (don't know exactly, he has his 2yo checkup next month so we'll find out then.)

We've hit the stage of "me! walk! SELF!" So I will take the wrapping cuddles whenever I can get them, LOL. Heatwave or no heatwave.

----------

9pm and the outside temperature is finally down to 27, same as the inside temperature - so windows open, fans on, see how cool we can get it by 5am. Rinse and repeat.

I spent a couple hours in the garden this morning mowing, pruning tomato plants, picking currants, and watering of course. Good Lord. It was a hot. Almost full sun the whole time. Saw a few shirtless landscapers working nearby and was thankful I didn’t have to do that all day. Then I saw the little old lady heading to market with her trolly bag, long pants and long sleeve cardigan sweater and thought that maybe I’ve just gotten soft.

We only hit equal temps at 11 p.m. last night, but we have the same strategy. Once outside and inside are the same temp we open everything up and turn on the fans. We got it down to 24 before buttoning up at about 8:30. Presently 25 in and 30 out.
