Working and living in Vaud, Valais, Berne, Fribourg without fluent French or German?

We're considering moving out of the German part of Switzerland because jobs in English are very scarce if you speak English only.

We both work in tech (software engineer, QA engineer) but before you say that in tech you only need English, that's not true everywhere. I'm in St Gallen now and everywhere demands fluent German, they won't even consider someone who doesn't speak fluent German.

We don't want to go to Zurich because we'd like to stay in a smaller town/village with more quiet, nature, and less pollution.

How is it in Vaud, Valais, Berne, and Fribourg for English speakers?
Are English jobs easier to come by?
Can you work in the main city and live in the nature 20-30 minutes away by public transit?

I doubt it, though with French as well you should get along better. But English only jobs are few and far between no matter where you live here. Depends on what skills you have to offer and the company itself. For example my husband works for a company with 56 different nationalities so English is one of the official office languages along with French.

There's this thread with links for other threads re English speaking companies so maybe look at those, see what possibilities there may be.

Not that much different I would think. These areas are also getting a lot of "frontaliers" from France that are multi-lingual, competition is just as strong as elsewhere in CH

You didn't mention Geneva.

Pure English, not that many around - maybe some in the big cities in the internationals. But having French is almost always an advantage. I'd say the majority of english-speaking jobs will be in the big cities (Lausanne or ++ in Geneva), which kind of defeats your purpose.

20 minutes is a big ask, 40 minutes is more realistic (if you don't have oozes of money to spend on rents)

I'd say EN only jobs are few.. Big international companies only .. I work for one..

However software DEV / Test / QA etc is generally not done here, that's done in India. Most big companies are same no?

So maybe catch 22 .. Big companies with EN only have less of those type roles..

I think there are more English speaking roles in the IT space in ZH than in Suisse romande.

If you don't wanna live in Zurich itself, why not move to some surrounding smaller town/village, and then commute?
It may be doable even from Aargau or Zug.

Plenty of English-only jobs in Vaud, but also understand that competiton for these positions is fierce. There are people applying from Switzerland and Europe. Don't leave your current job without having something lined up.

Re: Working and living in Vaud, Valais, Berne, Fribourg without fluent French or Germ

My husband is a Software Developer in Basel and doesn't need German for his job, although we both take German classes. It wasn't set down as a requirement when he came here nearly 5 years ago. He's part of a multinational team who liaise with other teams in Zurich and London. He has some Swiss colleagues who don't like using High German so they prefer to speak English. Other colleagues are German, Italian, French and Swedish, all English speakers. At the moment he is the only member of the team who has English as a mother tongue.

Perhaps it depends what type of company you work for? The project he works on is global so is being developed using multilingual software.

Yes, in ZH canton. Lots of lakeside villages are less than 30mins from ZHB.

I guess it depends on the definition of "away". Like, if your workplace is another 20mins by public transport from ZHB
