Re: Household Items

Try the Brockis (Brockenhaus) for second hand stuff, flea markets.

Re: Household Items

OTTO is very good for things like cheap crockery, I got a plain white porcelain 4 place setting dinner service, including coffee cups and saucers for only 19CHF. I buy dried food like pasta, noodles and rice in there as you get some things for around a franc or more. Things like bedlinen, cushion covers etc I use IKEA (makes sense as I have an IKEA Malm bed with drawers underneath). The supermarkets like Migros and COOP have budget priced things like sets of tumblers and wine glasses.

A visit to a few Brockenhaus shops will get you some very nice second hand things. We were on a really tight budget to furnish our first apartment three years ago, so I used to take myself off to local second hand shops whilst husband was at work. A real bargain find were some high back upholstered dining room chairs, they were a little grubby and I didn't like the colour, but i cleaned them and added some cheap and cheerful loose covers that tie around the back, now they're as good as new. Before our furniture and belongings came from Scotland last winter, I bought second hand bric a brac to decorate our place with and I'm so fond of some of the items I found that I'll be taking them to Scotland when I move back there on retirement.

Also don't discount items that are left on the street with a "gratis" sign on them as they are often in good condition and just need cleaned up a little.
