Getting hitched? Finger Lickin' Good

Organising a wedding can be a tough job.

There are so many things to worry about: the seating plan, the menu, how the night flows, making sure your uncle doesn't get up and make an impromptu speech after a few too many whiskeys...the list goes on.

That's why loads of people get wedding planners to take away all that decision making and they do a really good job.

But what if you had some weird fantasy of having your nuptials be all about love, adoration, commitment and KFC chicken?

Either as long as it's a Chateau Cardboard being poured from a goon, seeing as it's KFC in Australia.

Re: Getting hitched? Finger Lickin' Good

Back in the late 1980s, a couple I knew very well (I introduced them to each other) decided to get married at very short notice, and no! She wasn't pregnant!

The wedding party met at Maccy D's for breakfast before walking up the road to the registry office. The reception was in the local biker/rock pub and the wedding cake was a huge chocolate space cake. I couldn't get the day off work at short notice so only joined the party at 3pm. By this time, the happy couples' parents, grandparents and relatives were all completely off their faces with absolutely no idea they'd been scoffing space cake.

Cannot think of something less romantic than a KFC wedding.

We didn't hire a wedding planner (that is soooo pretentious), had a 120 persons wedding and everything turned out well. (relatively well..)

People make it romantic, not a venue.
Also, a wedding at KFC will be one of those rare ones that people will actually remember.

Yeah, but there are some limitations to "people make it romantic"...although there is some truth here.

Who knows, maybe that will be a very successful wedding format. Kids will definitely be happy if their parents get invited to one of these weddings..

Can't argue with that!

I think it all depends on our individual ideas of "wedding". For some is just a quick reception, a glass of prosecco, congrats and bye bye.

I wanted a place where our families (just to give an example - only on my side my mom has 3 siblings, my father 1, and each of them has 2 children so when you add them up....boy, are they many ), friends and colleagues would fit. And no, not inviting family members or best friends from school etc was out of the question. Plus we needed a place to dance....in short, to have a classic wedding most of us have imagined long before the marriage was even a subject.

Times change. Who knows what our kids will find "cool"....

Probably neither. Something more like Budweiser or Feldschlösen is tops!

Re: Getting hitched? Finger Lickin' Good

My wedding was memorable for being in a registry office with 2 witnesses and 2 neighbours who sat at the back because they felt sorry for us. This all came about because my husband's parents, particularly his very controlling mother, treated us appallingly (she is a real East London matriarch in the mould of Pauline Fowler and her mother on Eastenders and it's her way or the highway).

This tiny congregation of 6 was made up of English, Scottish, Welsh and Iranian, best man was a Muslim and one neighbour was Jewish (you could include Irish as well as I'm Irish on my late pa's side lol). I was in tears through most of it and couldn't get the words out without help.

Outlaws didn't know we'd got married until 6 months later, husband's mother told him she'd never felt like a mother to him and he'd be back on the doorstep 6 months later asking to be taken in because he'd left me. That was in 1986.

For all he has no emotional attachment towards her, husband's mother is now dying. He's put his feelings on one side during the summer to travel home and sit at her bedside. I think to myself what a man, because i know if it was me I couldn't do it.

Wow, Cherub......what a story. And I thought my m-i-l is sometimes a bit...aheam, overbearing. She tried to impose her views and ideas (on our wedding payed with our money, may I add...we always wanted to be totally independent and free of certain type of "obligations") but we managed to avoid major conflicts and minded our own business...and it worked out quite nicely for us so far. She's much wiser these days anyways.

Nowadays marriage rate is decreasing and it has become more privileged for the richer/upper-class couples.

That said, this is one of the ways to look at this "weird" KFC wedding.

Not in my cheap, low-costs country, by all means...no. Weddings are still affordable for almost all budgets, besides people get a lot of help from relatives, friends etc.

But thanks for bringing this up, this is very interesting and a recurrent theme on EF. I noticed many people link certain things (education, mainly), and now - weddings, with a privileged socio-economic status. It might be valid for many places, not all though.

Agreed.
I briefly worked as an assistant wedding photographer back in the day, and I've been to some stunning weddings in recent years. I've also been to some exceptionally low budget ones too where the bride and her family stayed up for most of the night before making the buffet. I've been the free wedding photographer for friends who didn't have two pennies to rub together on a few occasions, and put together a very decent wedding album as my gift to them.

The budget for a wedding really doesn't matter. With every wedding I've been to, there's an almost tangible moment when it switches from everyone nervously doing what's expected of them, to it becoming a real party. One of those moments at a wedding we went to in 2014, now has 17.7 million views on youtube and was broadcast by a couple of tv shows in the US. The bride was my best friend at work, the girl who I'd sat next to for the previous year. She had absolutely no idea that her wedding would turn into one of the best parties many of us had ever been to. She wanted everything to be correct and proper to please her grandparents. Her family had other ideas.

So it doesn't matter if it's in KFC, Maccy D's or a palace, weddings will always be about getting a number of people together in one place to celebrate. Having said that, whilst I was reading this thread yesterday we received an invitiation to a family wedding in Chelsea. All I can think is 'Made In Chelsea' and have gone into the usual tailspin of 'what the hell should I wear?' and 'the diet starts today!'. Same as any wedding.
