Re: September's "I Am #$%$ing Fuming" thread

Ah....I'll take the risk of stating my opinion and then I'll run for cover. I am pretty sure that whoever made that programme has asked a bunch of girls and a bunch of boys first and came up with what they thought were the most popular choices. No big sexist conspiration here IMO. I know, it's difficult to accept this explanation.

I'm going ballistic over this super sexist shit aimed at 11 and 12 year olds!!!!!! The boys can choose from stuff that actually can get them super cool jobs later on, while girls' choices of smoothies making, makeup, or pole f#$@ing dancing does what exactly???!!!!

@#$# this shit!
You realize that this day has nothing to do with showing kids a particular career pathway, but rather to give kids an opportunity to reflect about different gender roles, identities and stereotypes. As of very recently all those programs were only open to girls, same goes for the Nationaler Zukunftstag, which is actually showing different career pathways to kids. I'm glad this has changed and boys also get an opportunity to take part in such courses.

Kid brings home the Culture Day 2019 flyer (Mädchen Kulturtag 2019) for girls.

The choices:

- Trampolin
- Aerial silk - aka pole dancing on a #%@&ing rope
- Hip hop
- Smoothies
- Jewelry making
- String art
- Natural cosmetics
- Horror makeup
- Songwriting
- Grafitti.

I insist that she gets me a flyer geared towards boys.

Boys' choices:

- Parcour
- Music producing
- Graffiti
- Manga drawing
- Magic
- Cell phone video producing
- Flyer design

On upside - jewelry making can beat them all!

I think you’re being a bit harsh about aerial silks, it’s a lot more than just pole dancing and is certainly not exclusively a female domain. It is a pretty hardcore workout and requires serious upper body strength.

Just look at Cirque du Soleil for examples of fantastic aerial silks routines.

Yeah, I thought that too. I have noticed belly dancing for instance is quite popular these days, what does it tell about women who choose to pursue courses like this?

Anyways, I think the main idea was to have fun and kids to enjoy these two days.

Just been checking aerial silk out, never heard about it before.
I think I´ll rope it in together with pole dancing and despite all the keen acrobatics, it´s just eye-candy for men who are into that kind of stuff.

Not just female candy. The arms on the fellas that do this...

And I'll wager it takes a lot more training and skill to do this than the average pole dancer. The acrobats will have been training for years. Cores of steel!

Re: September's "I Am #$%$ing Fuming" thread

The aerial skill actually looks really cool. It's not pole dancing - it's not sexy and it's actually quite graceful (and pretty cool when they drop out of a sudden).

But it does get on my nerves that design topics are basically only for boys (I've spent enough of my life in comic book stores to know there's enough choice for girly girls in the manga section). I agree that the stuff they could learn from the boy section might be much more useful later in life than the available girl activities.

It's pretty weird that they divided this by gender. I do think some boys would love to know how to do horror make up, specially with Halloween around the corner. It would be so much easy to put "here's a list of possibly activities - choose whatever you want".

I know if I would have to chose, I'd have a hard time with the girl section. Maybe do write a suggestion letter, once you calm down a bit, for next year - to not divide the classes by gender?

Good for them!

I got trained in Morse code when small. They also trained us in naval knots, packing a 4.5kg nuclear evacuation suitcase, etc. It is a nice change for me to see it as a language, yeah. We did some Braille and signing, as well.

I take it this is another cultural clash I'm reading about on EF lately.

Urs Max, are the kids split in two groups in every school, canton etc? Is there any chance that some schools are mixing up boys and girls and allow them to freely choose their activities?

They’re not separated by gender in Neuchâtel, in our school district at least.
