September's "I Am #$%$ing Fuming" thread

Kid brings home the Culture Day 2019 flyer (Mädchen Kulturtag 2019) for girls.

The choices:

- Trampolin
- Aerial silk - aka pole dancing on a #%@&ing rope
- Hip hop
- Smoothies
- Jewelry making
- String art
- Natural cosmetics
- Horror makeup
- Songwriting
- Grafitti.

I insist that she gets me a flyer geared towards boys.

Boys' choices:

- Parcour
- Music producing
- Graffiti
- Manga drawing
- Magic
- Cell phone video producing
- Flyer design

I'm going ballistic over this super sexist shit aimed at 11 and 12 year olds!!!!!! The boys can choose from stuff that actually can get them super cool jobs later on, while girls' choices of smoothies making, makeup, or pole f#$@ing dancing does what exactly???!!!!

@#$# this shit!

I'm pretty sure my daughter would prefer the girl activities.

As for cell phone video producing: girls do that all the time on Tik Tok

Frankly, I don't think that boys could get a super cool job as pole dancers, nor do they wear much makeup.

While graffiti is unpaid, street cred leads to jobs in the visual arts sector associated with it. I was surprised graffiti was offered to both groups knowing who takes credit for most of the art, and scores in the visual arts installations in museums and galleries. Hint: NOT women!

If you checked the jewelry industry which is huge in Switzerland, who holds the lower manufacturing positions? Who has the swanky upper level jobs? Hint: NOT women!

Your point again? Are you fuming about the inequity of what's on offer, or that I'm protesting raising future cooks, models, and prostitutes?

TIK TOK is popular and could have been offered to both.

Just to play devil's advocate, I read it as a "culture" day so not really much to do with future jobs.

Having said that, none of it is much to do with "culture" either and all the subjects seem a bit airey-fairy fluff. What's the aim of the day? Just seems like a day of arty projects.

Our school does a project week once about this time of the year then again closer to the spring, but it's all inclusive (i.e. everyone gets to do everything - no excuses) and it's usually a wider topic broken, such as "countries of the world" broken down into sub topics.

isn't this just based on what the kids actually want to do. i guess if you want to be completely PC you can just have the activities open to all and let them choose.

Re: September's "I Am #$%$ing Fuming" thread

I don't understand why they split it. Why even suggest some activities only to boys and some only to girls. Is it because of the particular teachers (with particular skills) being available only on particular days? Looks like it.

FunnyBone - good thread, btw!

If I was a kid again and had a choice...what would I want. Hmmmm. Fishing. Morse code. Pole dancing. Coding. Robots. Souflés. Speaking Mongolian. Climbing. Woodwork (Ikea furniture geared). Whatever else but not divided by gender, it is strange.

Re: September's "I Am #$%$ing Fuming" thread

I still remember the utterly patronising interview I had in response to my request to do home economics instead of metalwork and woodwork in my 3rd year at school.

The poorly-shaven little shit looked like I'd stabbed his puppy when I suggested that there was no place for absurd gender stereotypes in the year 1983.

How times, er, don't change...

Same here but in reverse. My school didn't offer tech drawing to girls and my aim at that age was to be an architect. My dad went to school in his work overalls and played merry hell. They also didn't offer physics to girls, but I picked that subject up again in college.

Our school split it into classes rather than genders. Our class did HE (cookery, needlework, food tech) for half the year while the parallel class did Technology (metalwork, woodwork and technical drawing), then we swapped.

At the end of the first year at high school, I'd learned to cook a new dish each week, made an underskirt, learned... well I'm not sure what we were supposed to learn in Food Tech , then made an ornate hatstand in metalwork, a wooden boat and drawn plans for a bird house.

The best bit was you were allowed to go there at lunch time to finish stuff off so it was a bonus in the winter...

I'm not fuming at all. Peace
But since you're talking already about careers and getting paid, why don't you regard "raising future cooks" as leading to a highly successful and highly paid chef career?
Similar to the "graffiti to visual artist" path that you described.

This is canton Aargau, but it is a national event day on November 9th, so I'm sure it will be happening in other cantons as well. I am curious what other cantons have on offer.

Do you realize that you are the problem! You don’t have the appropriate attitude to live in Kanton Aargau. You need to appreciate the advances made by the Kanton in recent years, after all they are now willing to consider letting boys participate in something called: Mädchen Kulturtag.
