Homework Question

For one of the kids.. Join the dots using the numbers 5-10-15 etc..

Seems obvious but apparently it’s meant to make a shape?!

Help me out here please :-/

Re: Homework Question

Weird...I would have done the exact thing myself (and yes, I can also count). Perhaps it's just not supposed to outline a shape at all.

I would have done the same, are you sure it’s supposed to make a shape?

Re: Homework Question

I hate to say it, but that homework sheet looks a bit... amateurish.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was supposed to make a shape, but just doesn't.

Re: Homework Question

I'm seeing it as a boat with a sail and a rudder because the text doesn't say you have to connect all the dots. So if the dot next to No.10 can be used for 25 and/or 10 (25/10), etc, otherwise the no.25 would be written above that dot to differentiate it. The only definite line is from 45 to 50. I did wonder if the numbers were the angles or length of the lines at first, hence the question. Reminds me of basic geometry and learning to use a protractor.

Nah, really: it's just a very shoddily constructed worksheet. It's probably supposed to be a house, but the teacher never bothered to check if it worked.

Re: Homework Question

If we forget about 45 and 50, than the rest is the most weird aligned drawing I've seen of "draw a house with one line"

Re: Homework Question

Maybe that is what the teacher’s house looks like.

Re: Homework Question

I think the original worksheet's been augmented at some point. Looks to me like "40 / 5" meant that you should use the same dot twice, for 5 and again for 40 - but then somebody went "oops, where's the dot for 40, the mimeograph must have eaten it" and helpfully added one in

Try it that way and you get an envelope (with two weird extra line segments at the end - maybe the original only went up to 40?)

I actually see that someone has added 5 extra dots, and that the original going up to 40, and dots 0/30, 25/10, 15/35, and 40/5 being used twice.

Re: Homework Question

Thanks people ..

This is for 8-9 year old .. Very basic arithmetic i guess. I could only make out a house or maybe a sail boat.. But still, it's rubbish!

Maybe they’re not supposed to use the second dots next to the 0/30, 25/10 etc as that would then clearly make a house.
The 45 and 50 would still be surplus to requirements though.

It seems like a badly constructed exercise to me.

I've lost count of the evenings when I've been asked to help with totally ambiguous or nonsensical homework questions.

But that's not as bad as the last few school trip letters - they've gone into minute detail about what to wear, what to take to eat, what time to meet at the bus stop but for the last four at least, none of them have mentioned the date of the actual trip!

Don't teachers proof-read anything any more?

Re: Homework Question

Well not much feedback from the kid..

How was school ?
Fine..
What happened with the arithmetic question?
It was marked correct
Did the teacher say anything about the shape?
No

So .. I guess it met the teacher's expectation.
