Appenzell forever!

Birthday bash in Appenzell week-end just gone and a hangover to match the level of excitement!

My friend Ruedi Roth, composer of the soundtrack to the film "Grand Budapest Hotel" for which he was awarded an Oscar (hear below)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9h-_LTOsqw ...organised a Stopete, a bit like a Yodel jam session and I got the privilege to be invited to sing with him the same song. I was nervous as can be but did quite well. I would post a video if I knew how to do it, but if it ain't youtube, it ain't working!

You can imagine all those Appenzeller farmers, quite wary of a "foreigner" having a go at their own special traditions, but they really opened up and till 3.00 a.m. I was on free drinks, getting pulled into various groups for more yodels, ringing cow bells (as you do!). God knows how many Schnapps I downed, but what a night to remember.

The colours, the Ausalp (I got my own private one!), the huge welcome...and if I did not want to end my life milking cows, I must say there were a couple of very welcoming Appenzellerinen who did make me forget all my little misadventures in Geneva and almost convinced me of a resettlement in the Eastern Green Pastures! I'll be back in January for the Premiere of the Jodel Musical in Wattwil!

Re: Appenzell forever!

An oscar for a yodel??

What is a "Ausalp"? Do I want one of my own as well?

Now all we need is a Schwinger-fan. Maybe from Ireland? A hulk would be good. And a Hornussen-fan of course .... the new cricket for an English man?

Ausalp, I think that's what they called it ( I nodded and smiled non stop for 3 days but still didn't understand a word!), is when the farmers take their cows down from the mountains, it's called "Désalpe" in our part of Switzerland.

An Oscar for a yodel, yes indeed. And why not? I'll be the next one!

Alpabzug! They might use a word like Ausalp for that, true. How could you have one of your own though?
That's actually pretty cool, I saw one once in St. Gallen (1990-ies) when all the cows walked straight through the city. LOL.

So now we know why you prefered Appenzell to Geneva so much: Stuff you don't understand automatically sounds friendly.

Yeah, hey, thumbs up for a yodel oscar! And when you get yours, we have so many stories to tell about the new celebrity <giggle>

Re: Appenzell forever!

That yodel is hauntingly beautiful; an Oscar more than well deserved!

Glad you enjoyed your birthday weekend McTAVGE, hope the hangover doesn't last too long; and your new tenant doesn't think you're getting bladdered every weekend is the norm!!

PS; a court in Germany has just ruled that a hangover counts as an illness, perhaps you could get a few days off work to recover? https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-49802749
