Cats .. Crapping in my garden..

Following on from the recent cat going in the house thread ..

I have cat(s) crapping in my garden daily. Not in a corner or in the flowers or bushes but on the grass in front our downstairs door, right there on the grass like a dog would do. I think they all crap on each others crap now. All in the same area like a 5x5 m square of the garden.

I have CCTV cameras outside and one specifically covers this door.. Although the camera is not close enough to see the actual crap pop out, it does capture cats stopping there each night.. And it doesn't capture any other animal there like dog/fox/cow etc..

Ideas to prevent them? It's not really practical to sit there all night with a water gun!

Either get a cat, or mow orange peel into the lawn. With the latter, the peel can't be seen once shredded, but cats really don't like the smell.

Re: Cats .. Crapping in my garden..

Those things did nothing for us, I swear the cats were laughing as they walked right past them.

What worked for us was half full PET bottles of water lying on the ground. It looks really ugly but it works and once the habit was broken and the cats went pooping elsewhere we took them away.

Tried that. Scared our dogs, but not the neighbour’s cat unfortunately

Re: Cats .. Crapping in my garden..

My vet told me to put cat food (dry) scattered in areas in the flat where the cat would go and crap or pee as they totally dissociate eating and "toilet" areas...it worked, in the sense she no longer craps in the entrance hall...she crapped on my bed instead! And I don't fancy sleeping with cat food on my duvet either!

Re: Cats .. Crapping in my garden..

Get a dog.... I know I know can't be easily done.

My hubby had this problem for almost 2 decades too, until I moved in with my dog.

He tried every thing available/recommended to him..... from all kind of cat repellents, scattering my dogs combed out fur to waterguns to ultrasound devices .You name it, he tried it, but..... nothing helped.

About a month after I moved in with Lizzie -> cats gone, on our fenced in grounds, dog is allowed to chase them off. Alas, the sneaky buggers know when dog is at kennels and then come back😡😡😡

Re: Cats .. Crapping in my garden..

Best is to dress up like a tiger and hide yourself in the garden in the middle of the night. Once you see the cat you growl like a tiger and he will never come back again. Ideally do this on a cold and rainy night.

Also don't forget to ask your wife to film it.

And post it on this forum.

Re: Cats .. Crapping in my garden..

I had this problem some years ago. Tried putting down repellent, nets, high freqeuncy alarm, etc. In the end the thing that really did the trick was a motion detector water sprayer. Cats hate it. After a while you don't even need to hook it up to the water, just that sight of it scares them away.

Re: Cats .. Crapping in my garden..

I guess it's the entire garden? In that case I wouldn't know.

I had the problem when I set up my big vegetable frame and the plants were all small or even invisible. The cats thought it was a great giant cat loo.

I covered it in pepper. Worked.
Washes off in the rain though, loses power = needs to be redone regularly.( I got the cheapest pepper from Lidl for that.) Could be difficult on a big lawn

We had spread some bark mulch along the etches of the bushes along the wall this summer. While I was telling my neighbour I'm thinking of covering my vegetable bed with this for the winter to keep the cats from it, a cat scrolled in to do her thing, happily scratching the bark mulch. I could literally finish my sentence with "okay, maybe not". (I thought it was kind of nice of the cat to react immediately before I wasted any time dragging the stuff in).

So I will put some wire mesh on it. Cats don't like walking on that and the fact that it stops them from scratching the ground.
Now again you can't do this accross an entire lawn and specially not if you want to walk on it yourself. But winter is coming, so you could spread a few pieces of that here and there. Already having to walk accross it to get to their "favorite" place could put them off.

Landi sells that by the meter.

If you can ID the cats from CCTV, speak with the owner and if they do not respond, collect the deposits and leave on the owners door-step/garden/car, etc.

Dogs owners generally clean up after their animals, so ...

Won't work. You'll get prosecuted for harassment. As you probably would if it was from dogs to be honest. But anyway, dog owners are legally responsible for their dog deposits. Cat owners are not. Cat owners are not responsible for the actions of their cats. You can shoot a dog causing a problem on your land. You'll be prosecuted if you shoot a cat.

Dogs are under law domesticated; cats are wild animals - not controllable.
