Driving alone in a car to be punished by fine [proposed]

Punishment required for empty commuter cars

According to the Swiss newspaper "Le Matin Dimanche" . The proposed bill stipulates that workers who travel by car from France or other Swiss cantons must have at least three persons on board. Otherwise, they would have to pay a CO2 tax equal to twice the price of a public transport day pass in Geneva, which is currently 20 francs. Critics of the idea, however, demanded in the newspaper to create a positive incentive for a carpool. This could be about lanes for fully occupied cars.

You seem to be having some problems with basic English comprehension. Can you not see the difference between a tax and a fine/punishment? And what part of "proposed" are you failing to grasp?

Makes perfect sense. In the French part you need at least 4 people in the car to be able to read the road-signs in time

article in French.

I don't remember seeing minimum-speed-signs. I want more of them.

Tbh, when I compare the level of tax/Vat with other West-European countries and what the government gives me back in return, I don't consider taxes in Switzerland a punishment.

When its a CO2 tax then its a fine/punishment/way to fill the state pockets

That is the beauty of this proposal. The charge won’t apply to GE residents, but to non-GE registered cars. VD and 01/74 registered cars must make up 2/3rds of the cars on the Geneva streets.

The Genevois will vote for this in a flash.

These highly paid government "sleepers" who have nothing better to do than sitting around thinking of new ways to steal the money from honest workers. They should throw these lazy good for nothing's on the street. They can dig holes and feel what it's like to do an honest hard day's work!

Re: Driving alone in a car to be punished by fine

Zurich taxing all the cars from AG (and Germany)?

"Where do I sign up?"

People would drag their elders out of retirement homes to have them vote for that one.

The thing is, people go by car to be alone. That's one of the points I often hear.

I imagine if you're married with kids, that might be the only quiet time of the day for you....

Had you said people would drag their elders out of retirement homes to fill up the car, I would be all for it. That would definitely be a societal improvement.

this is fairly unbelievable. There are a load of reason's you might be alone in a car. Carpooling with people who dont work in the same location for example will leave one person driving at some point.

Dreamt up by some left wing environmentalist loon who isnt married.

No, don't be silly. It's just a way to squeeze more money out of people.

Think of it like speed-cameras.

Re: Driving alone in a car to be punished by fine

I would assume that the purpose of this is to either reduce congestion or reduce pollution, maybe both. I am in favour of legislation to reduce either and would certainly vote for it

London has the £11,50 congestion charge as well as Ultra Low Emission zones and you don't have the benefit of it being waived if there is more than one person in the car. This is not a punishment at all.
