Re: What would you do with a spare room?

We have a Spare Oom. It's where the ironing board lives.

And my shoes.
And bags.

And emergency spare yarn stash.

Our spare room is the storage room for all the artwork that is not currently on display in the rest of the apartment.

Tom

P.S. This is what happens when you inherit a villa full of artwork.

Just display it. There's no shame in it.

But what I really want is a "snug": a tiny chamber, with a comfortable chair, a small table and a little shelf of books, warmly lit and cosy, with a lock on the door: a place to escape and hide, far from sticky fingers and argumentative little voices. There's a room I have in mind for exactly this purpose, though I haven't told my wife yet. If I'm very, very quiet, maybe she won't notice.
I think it's called a 'man cave' now.... a snug is a small room of a pub where you can sneak a point without being seem by the general public, although perhaps that would go down well too....

Butler quarters, complete with the butler of course

But if you have teenage daughters or will have, save it for a walk in wardrobe, that seems to be a must for the next generation

If I had a spare room I'd kidnap my German teacher, lock myself in there with him and not let him out until I'm speaking fluent German

Re: What would you do with a spare room?

Since my son and his wife got their own place, we have three "spare" rooms - one has been converted to home cinema/gaming room. One is my office/library. The other has a bed in it, and is used only for guests.

I want to convert it into a sauna.

There have been a few case studies citing some Swiss valleys as being some of the most polluted places on the planet due to the wood burning stoves.

As DB wrote though, the smell is nice.
I think "the planet" is a bit of a bold stretch, tbh. Most of the studies I've just flicked through on Google cite they are "the most polluted areas in the Alps".

Agree the traffic and stoves do create yucky air in those pockets of the Alps when the weather is right but I'm not sure the air quality of the likes of Chamonix or Sallanches are quite in the same league as the toxic lung-soup in parts of Zhengzhou or Linfen just yet.

Yeah, but shock-tactics get people listening.
And then when they see you're using shock-tactics and spinning the facts wildly, you lose all credibility and people stop listening.

I wasn't being serious in this post.

The Swiss valleys are not amongst the most polluted places on the planet. I wasn't being totally serious.

Maybe it was "citing case studies" which made it sound like you were being serious.

Re: What would you do with a spare room?

After they remove our now useless oil tank (the one we used for heating oil) which now occupies a 4.5mx2.5m room in the basement, I plan to slowly turn the place into a small gym (I'm thinking just stationary bike, maybe treadmill and mats), but it wil be big enough to also feature a TV, so that we can watch tele while we're at it.

First thing: put a freaking door. The room cannot be accessed now, but through a tiny 1x1 window. Then I'll put a small window, so at least there's some air exchange with the outside, and finally a carpet. The rest will be easy: electric sockets, a decent lamp and the TV stuff. Oh yeah, and the gym equipment, of course.

How about the most obvious: Use it to store spare parts
