Feeding chocolate to the weasels!

Because two of the little buggers decided to move in under my roof, I contacted Rent'O Kill who quickly replied that weasels are protected in Switzerland (keeps the cash flow going for insurance companies!) and cannot be killed.
So this evening when I got home from work, two "gardes-faune" ("Fauna Keepers") from the State of Geneva came to my home to set up a 2 meter long contraption with a mechanism worthy of a top engineering qualification (they demonstrated how it worked and all I can remember is that if I do it wrong, it's going to bloody hurt my hand!).
So, not only I have to place an egg in the middle while trying not to guillotine my fingers but also I have to scatter...wait for this, dark chocolate around the area to attract them! Damn weasels not only do considerable damage but one has to feed them not just any chocolate, dark chocolate! Then one has 3 emergency numbers to call including the police if the "catch" happens in the night as they are on 24/7 call with the Fauna Keeper on duty.
In France, apparently, they just smoke them out and kill them! Welcome to Switzerland!

Well, tomorrow, as I have to set up the trap and will be dressed in my kilt (remember? Big Scottish ceilidh in Grand Saconnex! Not an overwhelming response from Geneva there! See entertainment thread), I shall be worrying greatly about not getting anything else caught in those trap doors!

Christ it's like bats in the UK. You practically have to run a free batty bnb. And if you have newts... you may as well move.

I hope you manage to spring the trap without incident.

Mactavge I am surprised at you! The weasels have a right to live - have you no conscience?

Re: Feeding chocolate to the weasels!

I can just imagine having to dial 117 for the police in the middle of the night as they are on the chase with bank robbers and other criminals... "Hello, officer, could you quickly make your way to my godforsaken part of the canton to retrieve two weasels caught in the OFFICIAL state contraption, because the two darlings look like they've eaten too much chocolate and are in distress!"

Re: Feeding chocolate to the weasels!

They hate mothballs (Naphtaline boules) available at any drougerie, well at least in Vaud).

The last time I spread some out on the upstairs windowsills one of the fouines* was run over by a bus in front of the house. Haven’t heard from them since.

*That’s what they are called here, more similar to a stone marten than a weasel.

Do think you are confusing your pine martens and your weasels or perhaps your beech martens ('marte' and 'fouine' respectively).

Re: Feeding chocolate to the weasels!

Wait - dark chocolate is thought to be toxic for ferrets (dose dependent), so one would think it would be toxic to most weasels. I'm surprised it was recommended as a lure if weasels are protected. Not doubting the official weasel catcher, mind...

Or maybe that's why the 24/7 call instructions?

Over here in Schwyz, they just tell us to put a radio in the attic. Doesn't seem to scare them away, though. Or maybe my Marders were classical music fans?

The martens eat your cables. And while the weasels belong to the same group - it's like with the Scots: They are not all alike.

You had me puzzled:
<< I have to scatter...wait for this, dark chocolate around the area to attract the police if the "catch" happens in the night as they are on 24/7 call>>
Gave me all kinds of ideas about the Geneva police until I realized I had skipped a line.

It's furry, noisy and vicious when it comes to cables and roof insulation. That's all I know and I have to part with my precious chocolate because of the little devils!

They told me they got the trick from their colleagues in Canton de Vaud...knowing the love between Genevans and Vaudois (not!), maybe the "Fauna Keepers" from Vaud are playing tricks on their Geneva counterparts...

Re: Feeding chocolate to the weasels!

We live in the country and we've got them all, fouines (beech martens), martes (pine martens- the cable specialists), weasels and ermines, doormice - it is a way of life. If we tried to catch them, we would be at it 24/7...and badgers, foxes, wild boar, lynx, the odd wolf... and more.

On the other hand, we had squirrels that took a liking to our roof space in the UK. We tried everything- hard rock and bag pipes, strobo lights, buckets of sand with bleach and Jeyes fluid ...In the end, they had to go, the hard way, sadly.

Some interesting information found here. ( in English)

https://wiesel-gesucht.citizenscience.ch/en/mustelids/

In our neck of the woods we have martens, as well as foxes and deer.
