Quality windows are essential to pass your exams!

Received yesterday this message from an ex-student back 20 years ago:

"your a legend. One of my favourite teachers you and Steve fry. Did so much for me. you saved me 😅from getting expelled when i put somebody through the canteen window Prior to the GCSE Exams"

Ah, bless him! He was a tough case. However, this would not happen in our Swiss school...where the canteen windows are super thick, bullet-proof!

Is eating at school so dangerous these days?
Why bullet proof?

«Your a legend»
Considering his use of grammar, is that actually a compliment? 😊

Let's just say this is not your ordinary local comprehensive school.

So not like mine where a kid got thrown off the ferry by one of his class mates.

I hear it can also be quite dangerous as the local bus stop too

Re: Quality windows are essential to pass your exams!

Back in the 70s, the year after I left High School, the boyfriend of a girl who was in the year below me set fire to a Latin / Classics teacher's classroom because the girl had been excluded from his class for playing up. He threw a Molotov cocktail through the window late at night.

It resulted in the loss of a vast collection of Victorian maps the teacher treasured as he'd been collecting them since he was an undergraduate. The arsonist was caught and got 5 years, but after his trial the teacher had a massive nervous breakdown and had to give up work.

In recent months we've had a 14 year old boy charged with burning down a huge High School back home in Fife - kids today eh?

In my day you needed bulletproof windows in case of food fights. A well flung spoonful of school stew will pass through plate glass!

A good reason for not going to school dinners then. I was lucky, I only lived 5 minutes up the road so went home for mines

I lost a classroom to fire too.

As a result I never leave anything valuable or personal at work, ever.

Seems a bit extreme to some of my colleagues, but once you've experienced that, it stays with you.

Re: Quality windows are essential to pass your exams!

I have to admit, I felt really sorry for the teacher. He was a lovely guy albeit very strict and I was in his class for Classical Background and Latin lessons for 2 years. The maps were a collection of Victorian maps of the Greek and Roman worlds, he was passionate about the subject he taught. He was only in his mid 30s when he had to give up teaching.

Re: Quality windows are essential to pass your exams!

Once a student drew a knife at me because I was telling him to stop distracting his neighbour. He didn't know I had been in the army! I quickly disarmed him, took him to the head teacher with said weapon and he was kicked out of the school. The word got round that Mr McT. was not as smooth and gentle as he looked and I never got bothered ever again after that.

My parents were both teachers. I remember once they shared with me a poem that had been circulating the staff room. I only remember part of the penultimate line, and the last line.

... that rotten kid ...
and shot him between the eyes.
