And yet I kind of like it that they did not install red-lights yet. I wonder how many people who take their driver's license test are chased accross Central.
According to online newspapers, Central is one of the only two spots in Switzerland which will not be managed with traffic lights but by humans on site, due to the complexity and high variability of the traffic there (including pedestrians and public transports).

My blend: When you have 4 parallel streets, make one a dedicated high-speed road for cars, another a dedicated bus and tram viaduct, another a dedicated bicycle road, and the fourth a pleasant, family-friendly walking street.
This way everybody would be instantly cut off from 3 out of 4 transportation modes

More seriously, it's not completely a crazy idea. There are already pedestrian-only areas, there are tram-only streets, they are experimenting with bike-only streets, and of course streets exist with only private car traffic. It just can't be mathematically applied to the whole city, like we all liked to do in "Simcity"

This is already being done has beenn done for several decades already. For example, cars have been banned from most of the side streets in Niederdorf since long before I first came to Zürich, ditto on the other side of the river. Most of Bahnhofstrasse is tram and pedestrian only although there is still that messy and not too well thought out bit in the middle. More recently they've taken cars off much of Limmatquai and off the Münsterhof. That was an uphill struggle as there were objectors who delayed the project by about 10 years. One of the problems is that the major tram junctions such as Bellevue and Central are also major car junctions and the high number of conflicting turns just make bottlenecks and slow everything down. Ideally they should try to reduce the number of silly turns at junctions and keep trams separate from cars, but the way Zürich is built there aren't too many viable options.
