Weekend Ideas December

Hi

Any suggestions for where to go in December (this weekend for just a day) from Zürich, not too far via train... ideally I would like to see some snow and get in the Christmas spirit!

Thanks

Re: Weekend Ideas December

If you'd like to see a pretty Christmas market, you could take the charming little train from Wädenswil to Einsiedeln (23 minutes).

Weather there now:

Cold enough... maybe there'll be snow some time soon?

Opportunities for hiking (and if the snow comes for tobogganing) in almost any direction.
One option is to disembark from the train (from Wädenswil) earlier, for example at Samstagern, and get to Einsiedeln on foot.
Then get in from the cold and treat yourself to a delicious treat in Café Tulipan, which has been going strong since 1987.

Irrespective of your religious affiliation, it's worth a visit, at least from a historical perspective, to the Einsieldeln Abbey.

If you then feel like going farther afield, you could take another train from Einsiedeln to Bieberbrugg, which isn't a place with many attractions itself, but the trip is pretty, and once again, lots of opportunities to go for a winter walk, there. If you like the hop-on, hop-off exploration, take a postauto (overland bus) from there.

A day spent like that, with a good woolly cap, gloves and strong shoes, can give on the feeling of having left the city buzz altogether, and one returns tired and happy.

Re: Weekend Ideas December

Einsedeln as mentioned is maybe a good bet from Zurich relatively close.

For a full day, have an early start, go to Montruex. In the morning visit santas grotto at the top of Roche de Naye, half way down see the animal farm (should be snow up there and certainly festive), if enough time head to the castle for the medieval market, then finish the late afternoon and evening off at the montreux markets (which in my opinion are the best)

Other christmassy options but without the snow, Colmar in France and the villages around are really amazing markets. Train to Basel, and then usually the Alsace train card for a group is very very cheap.

Konstanz is in Germany and also quite good market for food and drinks

Just to throw some ideas out there and no idea how it would be, but you could do Rigi from Zurich, train tot Art Goldau up on the cable car, look around the snowy mountain, take the train down the otherside to pick up the boat and sail into Luzern and visit those markets, before coming home. Rigi is all on the GA train network, so a day ticket would cover you.

If you can find a hotel and manage an over night stay it opens a few more doors for you and can be more relaxed on some of these ideas

The thermal baths in Mt. Rigi on a clear day are awesome. There's a great view of all the snow covered mountains south of Luzern from the exterior pool. Don't be put off by their name: "Kalt bads". Wather is 30+ °C
