I have never seen someone with a PhD working in the beauty section.

Conclusion: nice, clean, made up, not too big/small, well proportioned are not very well educated
How dare ya!

I suspect they work on commission only, survival of the fittest in Darwinian terms.
This.

There's Israeli brand selling Dead Sea cosmetics via Manor, they are imported, educated and specialised. And while expensive, they give amazing facial and hand massages. Which feels even better by a hot person, sorry.

This is true. Hot people help the creams and ungulates to melt into the skin more effectively.

There are many overly curvy ladies in cosmetics, but no scruffy ones for sure.
They are the business card of the brand they represent.

Re: Discrimination - genuine observation/question

The harsh reality is this that some salespersons are simply not cut out for some types of products/services. This is especially so in the health / beauty / body care marketplace.

For example, a salesman flogging a hair restorer would not instill confidence in potential clients, if he himself was as bald as a coot.

Incidentally, the old barber I used here around 20 years ago, who had little hair himself, had in his published price list a service called something like "taper flaming" (I can't remember the exact name). I asked him what it was, and he said that it was a traditional process of encouraging regrowth of hair using a lighted taper around the areas where hair should again grow. He also said that he didn't believe in it himself, but some of his customers insisted on it, so he carried it in his price list.

Similar issues could arise with say weight loss products which could exclude a large class of sales personnel.

Others of these sorts of products rely on creating a sort of ambience which goes well outside the actual product itself. It is the the product itself, the packaging, the lifestyle it promotes etc. etc.
Would Chanel No5 smell just as sweet if the purchaser had to bring an old bottle into the shop and it would be re-filled there from a 45 gallon drum of the stuff ? Obviously, the marketing of these things has to be very sophisticated to get customers to part with huge sums of money for something which, in reality, brings little tangible benefit and misshapen old saleswomen don't somehow fit in to this, but this is definitely not discrimination (IMHO).

Re: Discrimination - genuine observation/question

I confirm my bias - that Premiere dude is great with my face. If he was more clever he'd manage to coax me into buying something, but he definitely has degrees in his profession, on top of his looks. The lady staff is great as well.

OP - I know Manor trainees and employees have strict training in terms of professional presentation/look/dress code, etc. There are many ways to aquire an air of beauty and poise, it's not just anatomy or conventional symmetry. I don't find that discriminatory, but sales promoting and marketing...it is as logical as a fit, good looking, chic banker in a suit. They almost always are.

I know you meant unguents. The ungulates melt into one's skin, too, but from the inside out.

Must be because of all the beauty products they use and sell! I should buy some too! Oh wait...

Amazing what the "spunky birds" at Manor look like after a " strip down"!
I "once " had a girlfriend who wore alot of makeup. There was one occasion where I caught her without makeup. She was a bit offended when I asked " have we met before?"
One has to learn @todayonly that beauty is more than just " make up " deep.

But if the recruitment pool is made up of people that way inclined, it's hard to find someone who has no interest in appearance and doesn't look like they are at least interested in the stuff they are selling and making themselves look good.

I don't think it's a discrimination thing more than just certain people gravitate to that kind of job/role.
At high end beautician stores I believe that is the case.

I don't know if selling cosmetics on the ground floor in Manor is the dream career path for very many people. Isn't that more the sort of job into which people gravitate because, well, they need a job and one is offered to them?

Don't think it's THAT different, though. You're only going to apply if you are interested in working there. The RAV isn't going to push you there either if you are, say, an office worker, receptionist or childcare assistant, are they?

Manor isn't particularly down-market either, is it? OK, so if you go for a general sales role at Coop City and end up in the cosmetics department selling make up as well as tampons, toothpaste and nail clippers then I can see what you're saying but people usually apply for the specific post on a cosmetic counter in these larger department stores.

Re: Discrimination - genuine observation/question

There are also other jobs in which you tend to see people who are generally better looking than the average. Airline cabin staff for example (of both sexes).

I do think there is some level of discrimination going on in recruitment. Possibly because managers think that's what customers expect.
