What about the wrist? And the ankle? Why not change lives through special German names there too?
No need, the English ones exist. I used them.
Nothing special abut the German ones. Used every day (specially since corona )

Do you think the Jewish communities in Wiedikon and in other parts of Switzerland will want to be vaccinated?

BTW, Israel vaccinated 600 kids from 12 yo.
Maybe they receive a special delivery from Israel?
(Wonder if it would get through customs without problem)

Amazing, and gratifying, how your tune has changed over the course of a year or so.
Yep, had to read the post a couple of times. TC talking about anti vaxxers with contempt! I guess it is because the vaccine in question is produced by AZ. Amazing how people change their views when it suits.

Sorry for the non sequitur... But, given the obstacles we face regarding vaccines etc... Notwithstanding, those who feel stuck/depressed. I thought I might post as I always loved this song... Peter Gabriel from the "So" album:

Why wouldn't they?
I've read that in Israel the lowest vaccination rate is so far among Jewish orthodox communities and among older Russian speaking immigrants, who watch and believe Russian state TV channels.

I know quite little about those communities so I even don't know if they vaccinate their kids. I know one lady who I talk to when we meet each other on the playground in Wiedikon, but I wasn't there for a year already. And it's not easy to have a dialog with a person who has to look after 5 kids so I didn't learn much about their style of living so far.

The federal government rejected its own vaccine production
The shortage of the corona vaccine doesn't have to be: The federal government could have set up its own production line at Lonza.

Worldwide there are complaints about the shortage of vaccines, but there is certainly capacity for larger production: Lonza's original goal was to manufacture 600 million doses for Moderna. Moderna only received an order for 400 million. That means: The production of up to 200 million additional vaccine doses in Valais would be possible, writes the “Tages-Anzeiger”.

https://www.20min.ch/story/bund-lehn...b-101024043960
Baehny, chair of Lonza's board and interim CEO, was interviewed at the end of August. He explicitly mentioned that they would build four production lines for Moderna, each with 100 mio doses annual production capacity. In addition, Lonza said elsewhere tow months ago that they aim to not just produce the main agent but also do the packaging and labeling. At that time it must have been already clear that Lonza had spare space, and potential spare production capacity (on a line or even two that was/were yet to be built).

Swiss emergency pandemic law lasted (almost) until the end of September. Until then the federal council didn't need any legislation, they had all the power necessary to order a production line (maybe even two). Afterwards the parliament legislated/legalised what needed legislating anyways, this would simply have been an additional task.

A production line takes 5-6 months to build (if a bioreactor can be procured in time), costs 70 mln and takes about 70 personnel to operate according to Boehny in the same article. The production lines are versatile, they can repurposed to produce other vaccines with relative ease. So the investment could have been used to produce a different vaccine even if Moderna's vaccine had failed.

IIRC Switzerland wastes about one billion annually in development aid. The excess capacity of one such production line would been far more useful, perhaps even at a fraction of the cost (in countries with the infrastructure for the -20°C).

I find it really difficult to wrap my head around why that wasn't ordered.
The money was ready, the need obvious, the production capacity (potentially) available, willingness of the producer more than apparent, yet nothing happened. And Lonza would have had the opportunity to enlarge their expertise into the targeted areas (packaging and labeling at -20°C), doesn't hurt to help them with that while fulfilling the public's dire need.

I'm not talking about anti-vaxxers with contempt, just that it's irresponsible to spread misinformation about vaccines at this moment in time. Unfortunately the damage has already been done by parts of the European media and certain politicians.

As I already said, my view hasn't changed. Whilst I may have expressed some skepticism that a vaccine would be found, or questioned the logic behind low risk people taking the vaccine without knowing if they prevent transmission. Now we have evidence that they're effective and just as importantly, that it is looking increasingly likely that a vaccine will be needed in order to return to normal life, then I think we should get behind the vaccine rollout.

I’ve read the same. I don’t know anyone in Wiedikon, but I know from the US that vaccination uptake in general is slow - there have been measles outbreaks in orthodox communities. I’ve also read that a lot of disinformation is spread in Haredi (ultra orthodox) communities in Israel. There was also mention of Bedouin communities rejecting vaccination because of government mistrust.

As for Wiedikon, I guess it will depend on the control of the local Rebbe (rabbi) and the acceptance of modern medicine.

And as always

Sweden is taking a different path.....

https://www.expressen.se/nyheter/cor...dernas-besked/
Well the Swedish government has been taking idiotic decisions or no decisions at all from day one so I'm not surprised there. In contrast I'm impressed by Denmarks approach, including hard decisions during this whole Pandemic. They have limited their numbers and protected their population.

Reminds me of a line from Stephen Fry's Hippopotamus. A character gives his definition of a CEO as being "a cross between a managing director and a ".
