Now you’re confusing me.
Are Lakeswimmer whom k and e quoted and Lifestrain who was defending the Russian pandemic response the same person?

The former seems to be most interesting in counting methods and the latter in the Russian response.
Indeed these are two different users with similar nicknames.

I also hold China and WHO responsible for the pandemic. Clear and transparent communication instead of hiding the facts may have saved lots of human lives around the world.
Interested to know why you believe WHO is responsible for the pandemic?

Where do you get these numbers? Do you have the link to the official statistics site? I fully agree that the number of the excessive deaths is the most reliable number of all the rest, this is why I follow the Swiss weekly total deaths stats. Do you have this information for Russia?
The best visual representation will be this picture. It based on the official data. Otherwise there are lots of articles in internet, just google "50% more deaths in Moscow in January" in Russian.

I don't follow China that much either, they seem to get it right and over with. Except if that was not for China, we would not have to deal with the pandemic in the first place
I don't follow that much covid news outside CH, but they just had the Shanghai autoshow in China packed with people close to each other, indoors. Something unthinkable for the moment around here.

I am not the poster...but there are many parties at play, here is a good article that shows a few of WHO's errors:

I completely agree. But then on the other hand, we should have been prepared better. Except the places that lived something similar with SARS and MARS, they nailed their strategies. We should have learned from their experiences and really not count on China or WHO (who had a deal with China) to provide clear and transparent communication.

OK, there are situations in which counting covid-19 deaths could be arguable. For instance extremely ill or old people whose life could have been ended even by a minor cold, let alone this virus. I don't know, I'm not a doctor and I'm not implying the current method used in (most of Europe) is incorrect, but have been thinking of that too.

Not exactly related to your link, just some thoughts.

Haven't there been outbreaks in Wengen, St. Moritz and Verbier?
Wengen, shit!. Those were the days when the Swiss bundesrat decided to let the ski pistes open while forgetting to require tourists make 10 day quarantine.....what a mess!!! This was a failure.

The Verbier one was on the 2019-2020 Winter when everything was open.

St. Moritz? 5 star hotel staff, and everyone was surprised how the hotel guest were not infected.

Probably should have introduced myself in the Newbie section first. But just to say my lake swim was Windermere as a 12yr old. My nickname for the rest of school years was FakeWindermere due to the fact that around half way, i was in agony from some “deep heat” or equivalent cream that I’d had applied before the start, and had to get the support boat ashore to wash off, as was stinging like crazy. Finished the swim but never lived down my low pain threshold.

I showed them all (joke) 20 years later by finishing 2nd in world Bog Snorkelling Championships.

Back to Covid.I only want to contribute and discuss , in good faith. My tetchyness, yes, very frustrated being stuck at home for months and hope to contribute to the forum in a positive way.

Because they praised China managing the pandemic in January and adviced against "international isolation" of China even after some of the local outbreaks in Europe were already linked to the visitors from China. The world paid the high price for the WHO's blind faith in everything China said to them in Dec and Jan.

In the next pandemic nobody will believe their tales or follow their advices and would act immediately.

These are not Covid deaths though that TinyK is referring to. The Covid deaths are aguable and I agree that this number should be treated with care. But these are the total deaths, and here you cannot be more definitive that this — you either died or not. The increase in total deaths is the number to watch.

TinyK, referring to your post about the second wave in Moscow and 50% deaths increase. In Switzerland in November-December there was the increase from just over 1000 deaths per week (expected) to 2000, this is about 70%. Moscow did better, right?

Hehe, welcome to the forum! I think you're coming here when the esteemed membership is already suffering from Covid-19 discussions fatigue and has transformed these threads into "Random thoughts on Covid-19 pandemic".

@leonie, but that's the challenge - if you're not assigning the increment to covid (in medical stats at least), then to what?

Apparently mask wearing, washing hands and minimizing contact time worked. Otherwise, why we have been wearing masks for almost a year if they don't work?
