My 92 year old Mom was just placed into hospice/end of life care yesterday.

I knew her days were numbered; a month ago, I scheduled a trip to the US for next Thursday. I was hoping to reschedule that flight when I woke up this morning and read about the Travel ban.

From what I have read, American citizens are excluded from this ban but face a 14 day quarantine after arrival - which effectively defeats the purpose of my trip to see my Mom.

I have tried repeatedly to contact American Airlines regarding my flight - both at the center here in Zurich and in the US to no avail. I guess I will just have to wait for more information from the CDC and keep phoning the airline.

Feeling very sad and frustrated...
So very sorry to read this. I feel for you.

Hey, this "groaned-at" post was not put in this COVID-19 thread by me!! I find it disingenuous as well as stupid and misleading that someone MOVED it here! Duhh ...

It has NOTHING specifically to do with this novel coronavirus. Instead it was a separate thread I started in another forum here as way to reduce the load on healthcare systems being flooded with common cold & flu cases so that individuals with this potentially more serious illness can get potentially life-saving treatment.

Sincere apologies for apparent confusion that I did NOT create!
Could you please stop quoting your essay in the middle of threads? I think once was more than enough.

Hugs, terri. I am worried about a few people as well, was supposed to see them as I type but Europe is getting sectioned into many individual no-go zones, one feels helpless.

CZ is stating a state of national distress, which basically means army/chef medicine are taking over from now on. Has never happened before as a preventative measure, so they are certain of a big mess about to happen. The media are publishing a list of high protein easy to keep longterm foods.

Quote from the Presidential Proclamation:

Quote:
Sec. 5. Effective Date. This proclamation is effective at 11:59 p.m. eastern daylight time on March 13, 2020. This proclamation does not apply to persons aboard a flight scheduled to arrive in the United States that departed prior to 11:59 p.m. eastern daylight time on March 13, 2020.
If I were in your shoes, I would be arranging a flight for today or tomorrow.

Best wishes.

Why would they need that? MarksnSparks only sells the huuuuuge boxes of it, in CZ, pretty much. I bet Brits have enough tea to last a life time. There is no protein in tea, on top. Will get pulses, nuts, bulgur, apparently butter based cookies are good as per CZ emergency guidelines.

I guess there is still plenty of fish in the sea for island countries, but CZ is a landlocked place. Proteins be dry and not tasty.

Elvis - fun to read the diluted peroxide mentioned, I grew up with that, diluted KMnO4 as well for the external treatment, we used this at home.

We get our protein from beans and beer. No need for anything else, which is helpful because....

Plenty of fish except nasty EU quotas that are still in force stop the patriotic, blue-passported Brits from extracting them!

Re: Coronavirus

I wonder how far into the community in Switzerland it is now.

I read somewhere they are only testing high risk patients... seems about right as I had direct exposure, Kanton told me all good, if symptoms appear, then quarantine- they wouldn’t test unless I had other risk factors... seems very relaxed approach, to what I have found is usually an uptight culture.

which would mean the 650 (+150 yesterday) is massively understated…

My guess is it’s everywhere, and not much one can do to stop exposure risk at this point (Unless you completely isolate yourself).... Swiss schools closed within 2 weeks if I was to bet.

In what way is Trumps ban ridiculous, but each EU country in effect doing that to its neighbours is not? (not that you literally said that obviously)
It doesn't include the UK and Ireland. ESTA's are easily available online. US, British and Irish passport holders from pretty much anywhere in Europe, can easily lie about which countries they've been to recently. All they have to do is get to a UK airport and fly from there. Too simple.

Re: Coronavirus

Bit of a first world problem I know:

I have a ski holiday booked in the Engadine from March 22 - 28. At present, the insurance will not accept refund for simply not wanting to go. The travel company is willing to send us somewhere else up until October 2020 - but obviously not skiing.

Within the next 7 days I expect the ski hotel will be forced to close - thus allowing an insurance claim. But if it isn't closed...

We are both just over 70 BTW...

Hahahaha. Now now..

Beers isn't the best antiviral. And they say soaking/cooking pulses gives more nutrition then your average overprocessed baked beans cans. If cans then meat and the rest unprocessed. Dry soups (how's that unprocessed, meh), chocolate, dry fruits and the hit of quarantine apparently is sauerkraut. I can't find suggestions for rice nor pasta, apparently not so nutritious.

Biggest advantage of pasta I'd say would be that is a cheap and easy to prepare filler which goes properly in almost every meal possible and also holds a lot of carbohydrates, dry in the cabinet it can last for yrs and once prepared easily holds for some days. Want to make your can of soup properly stuffing you up for hours, just add a hand of pasta.

It's a pretty good survival food.

Think about changing your flight to an earlier date (to tomorrow, perhaps). You can change most flights online, which would save you the time and frustration of waiting in a phone queue. The phones are overwhelmed. You might also just book a new ticket online and worry about canceling the other one later.

There is no mention of a 14-day quarantine for American citizens in the presidential proclamation and there are exceptions for children and family members. I expect things to change quickly in the next few days, however.

"“Today President Donald J. Trump signed a Presidential Proclamation, which suspends the entry of most foreign nationals who have been in certain European countries at any point during the 14 days prior to their scheduled arrival to the United States. These countries, known as the Schengen Area, include: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. This does not apply to legal permanent residents, (generally) immediate family members of U.S. citizens, and other individuals who are identified in the proclamation.”

I'm so, so sorry.
