Re: Coronavirus

The Presidential Proclamation says nothing about US citizens. It does not impose any quarantine on returning citizens. Not sure where this is coming from, if rumour or true, but it's not in the proclamation.

My 92 year old Mom was just placed into hospice/end of life care yesterday.

I knew her days were numbered; a month ago, I scheduled a trip to the US for next Thursday. I was hoping to reschedule that flight when I woke up this morning and read about the Travel ban.

From what I have read, American citizens are excluded from this ban but face a 14 day quarantine after arrival - which effectively defeats the purpose of my trip to see my Mom.

I have tried repeatedly to contact American Airlines regarding my flight - both at the center here in Zurich and in the US to no avail. I guess I will just have to wait for more information from the CDC and keep phoning the airline.

Feeling very sad and frustrated...

Bit of a first world problem I know:

I have a ski holiday booked in the Engadine from March 22 - 28. At present, the insurance will not accept refund for simply not wanting to go. The travel company is willing to send us somewhere else up until October 2020 - but obviously not skiing.

Within the next 7 days I expect the ski hotel will be forced to close - thus allowing an insurance claim. But if it isn't closed...

We are both just over 70 BTW...
I know this is complicated and I know I will come out insensitive, but I am in a place that doesn't know if we open tomorrow. I wish I could plan as ahead as one week.

I think in your situ I'd take Sept23-Oct30 option and look forward to hiking.

That said, considering AbFab mentioning age, I'd encourage older members of our community who have no family or friends network in place, holler to us here, should you happen to need anything or have a question. Don't be shy. Somebody will know what to do

I can't quite see sauerkraut being a hit in an embattled Blighty
I am so hungry. Sauerkrout soup with taters, onions and paprika, Szegedin style. Quarantine superfoods!

I cannot imagine what is in a UK quarantine pantry. Except marmite.

Biggest advantage of pasta I'd say would be that is a cheap and easy to prepare filler which goes properly in almost every meal possible and also holds a lot of carbohydrates, dry in the cabinet it can last for yrs and once prepared easily holds for some days. Want to make your can of soup properly stuffing you up for hours, just add a hand of pasta.

It's a pretty good survival food.
I got plenty. I think to change a potato country's mind on taste is hard, even in the time of distress. I think the guidelines back home clearly favor fiber as a filler as opposed to quick carbs.

I even put small pasta into a pulses soup, Italian style, yum.

Re: Coronavirus

There's a good chance that Coronaviros will be with us now day to day, like flu.
Death rates will drop once it's more understood, and vacccines are developed.

Right now, it's new. Next year, it's routine

Just make sure granny's affairs are all in order...

AbFab, re your ski holiday - why not ask the Hôtel if they would be prepared to give you a voucher for later in the year. This is what we have done with Loèche. You will probably have to forget about the skiing though.

Re: Coronavirus

"The FOPH anticipates that the measures taken across Ticino will probably be extended to the whole of Switzerland, one of its officials, Daniel Koch, told SRF radio on Thursday. Goal: protect people at risk and discharge hospitals.

"The rest of Switzerland will follow," said Daniel Koch, head of the communicable diseases division of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).

Following the multiplication of cases of Covid-19, the Ticino government decreed Wednesday evening the state of necessity in the canton until March 29. Public life will be markedly restricted. Non-compulsory schools, cinemas, theaters, sports centers or nightclubs will remain closed.

"The wave has now arrived," added Daniel Koch. "Switzerland, however, acted in time" to contain the spread, he said. He added that the authorities were taking the situation very seriously and that the right decisions must now be made as quickly as possible.

Solidarity with Ticino

The priority is to protect groups at risk, so as not to overload the intensive care units and to use hospital infrastructure wisely. In this way, it will be possible to avoid deaths, said Daniel Koch.

He stressed that Switzerland could learn from the situation in Ticino, a canton with which we must now show solidarity. Several cantons have also offered to help, according to the official.

Until Wednesday, Switzerland had registered more than 600 cases of coronavirus. Four people died from the disease."

True, it is not in the Presidential Proclamation, but expect more info soon for US persons (excerpt below from yesterdays Homeland Security press release):

Quote:
In the next 48 hours, in the interest of public health, I intend to issue a supplemental Notice of Arrivals Restriction requiring U.S. passengers that have been in the Schengen Area to travel through select airports where the U.S. Government has implemented enhanced screening procedures.

Re: Coronavirus

I'm a member of a volunteer fire brigade and we just received noticed, that all monthly training sessions will be seized until the Spring holidays. Reason for that is to maintain a healthy force in case we're needed and to avoid all non life-threatening gatherings. Oftentimes your local firefighters work closely with or a part of the civil defense service. This is just an FYI to let you know, that you can still count on the most reliable branch of civil servants.

This from the CDC website:

Apparently, further clarification will come within the next 24-48 hours.

Re: Coronavirus

New Swiss numbers for the day:

+ 213 new cases brings total to: 865 (including 4 death and 4 recovered)

Tomorrow new measurements will be announcement, one of which will be that nationwide events with more than 300 people will be forbidden,

Ministry of health says "no speaking of nationwide state of emergency yet" This to contradict the leader of the department of infectious diseases from the same ministry saying that this was to be expected anytime soon.

Note:

For those who missed this up to now, but a new case does not refer to a specific individual, it refers to a new point of infection, this could be a single person, or a whole family..

In my personal opinion it means that nothing will happen today besides watching the numbers go up, such a waste of time, another day doing nothing means another day on the same curve as Italy.

Only half the country stockpiles marmite. Along with deep-fried mars bars, jars and jars of jellied eels, Bakewell tart and tea bags. Obvs.

Unlikely as the hotel won't be able to sell the rooms to anyone else, clearly with a timeshare swapping dates is different.

Re: Coronavirus

A friend of mine living in Italy just posted this account of living in a Red zone

"Well it seems years since I opened FB on my computer but now under "Coronavirus" I might as well describe, to those of you who haven't had the pleasure, what life is like here in the Chianti hills:
We are now in 'the red zone' all shops/restaurants/ bars are closed and only supermarkets/ food stores/ pharmacies/ post offices and some banks are open.
Strangely enough couriers are still consigning goods so online shopping is still open for business- could that be the iron fist of Amazon slamming down on the desk?
To go outside of your own home you need to compile a module stating where you are going - and what for...woe betide you if you don't tell the truth, it carries a hefty fine and penal sentence.
You can be stopped at any time by security forces and your module will be checked.
You must stay in your own home.
You can go for a short walk - by yourself- no groups.
You can go to buy food.
You can visit elderly parents who are not able to look after themselves, take note that elderly people are more at risk so this is not a good idea..
You can't go to friends or family for dinner/ visit.
You can't go into another Comune unless it is for a valid motive.
You must keep at least 1 metre away from other people and wear a face mask if you have one - they are sold out so that's out of the question. I made one for myself yesterday as there was nothing else to do and tutorials are abundant on YouTube. Big THANK YOU to grandma for teaching me how to sew on the old Singer Pedal sewing machine...
So it's more or less like being a prisoner.
I had booked to go and see my mother for Easter but that went up in smoke a few days ago... who knows when I will get to the UK. Evidently if I do show up I will be whisked off into quarantine for 14 days minimum.
I sincerely hope this whole virus thing peaks and gets back to normal life soon, but I doubt it."

Finally, UEFA stops Europa and Champion League.

Spain reports 84 deaths in total and +687 new cases now total of 2.964

Bayern closing another 50 schools, bringing the total to 100.

Norway closing all schools and daycares, Norwegian press conference later today.

With France and Spain now seeming to take action, Switzerland and Germany look really out of touch with reality.

Limiting gatherings over 300 is like trying to empty the Ocean with a teaspoon...

In my little expat bubble everyone is flabbergasted by the ineptitude of the Swiss Government to react to this crisis, IDK if also the Swiss are realising how careless their government is.
