Re: Coronavirus

So, at long last it looks like there's some reliable data on long covid(LC), with LC defined as having significant symptoms at twelve weeks.
(For those wanting to send this on: AFAIA linking the PDF doesn't work)

The study is from the UK, covers 508K participants whereof 19.2% reported having had symptomatic covid-19, thereof 76'155 were included in the study (the other 21k had it less than 12 weeks before the study, too short for LC). 37.7% ( 28,713/76,155 ) report LC with at least one symptom, and 14.8% three or more.

To me the really worrysome part is that the symptoms are likely to persist in most LC cases (fig.1 p.22) and become chronic. Talking about those below age 35 for example, 30.7% of the symptomatic patients still had at least one symptom after 12 weeks (i.e. they suffered from LC according to the definition used here), they make up 18.5% of all LC patients.

(To provide a bit of a frame:
By February 28, the UK registered 4.2mln infections, according to data by Tagesanzeiger, 5.75% would be 241'500 LC patients).

Quote:
Among the 508,707 participants, the weighted prevalence of self-reported COVID-19 was 19.2% (95% CI: 19.1,19.3).

37.7% of 76,155 symptomatic people post COVID-19 experienced at least one symptom, while 14.8% experienced three or more symptoms, lasting 12 weeks or more. This gives a weighted population prevalence of persistent symptoms of 5.75% (5.68, 5.81) for one and 2.22% (2.1, 2.26) for three or more symptoms.

Almost a third of people (8,771/28,713 [30.5%]) with at least one symptom lasting 12 weeks or more reported having had severe COVID-19 symptoms (“significant effect on my daily life”) at the time of their illness, giving a weighted prevalence overall for this group of 1.72% (1.69,1.76).

The prevalence of persistent symptoms was higher in women than men (OR: 1.51 [1.46,1.55]) and, conditional on reporting symptoms, risk of persistent symptoms increased linearly with age by 3.5 percentage points per decade of life.

Obesity, smoking or vaping, hospitalisation, and deprivation were also associated with a higher probability of persistent symptoms, while Asian ethnicity was associated with a lower probability.

Two stable clusters were identified based on symptoms that persisted for 12 weeks or more: in the largest cluster, tiredness predominated, while in the second there was a high prevalence of respiratory and related symptoms.

Already been done, both vaccines are effective against hospitalizations (not sure if there's anything on transmission though). People who are concerned can get the vaccine and leave those that don't want to get it alone.

https://www.reuters.com/business/hea...ta-2021-06-14/
A new UK study (preprint) claims the most effective solution is a first dose of AZ followed by a second dose of Pfizer or Moderna.

This is the point, if people are concerned then they can get the vaccine themselves, no need to worry whether others are getting it.
Well, maybe some are concerned about further lockdowns and border closures, etc.?

But we were told the lockdowns were triggered by hospitals being unable to cope.

So if you take out that factor, what justification is there for fresh lockdowns?

Berset made it clear yesterday that the aim is to get through the winter without measures beyond vaccinations. However that's obviously subject to the populations's willingness to get jabbed and future developments, including the appearance of new virus variants.

If you, MC, Fduvall, FMF, MFG, Tony Clifton, Codpeace (not sure of his new forum name), V_ want this forum to become some far-right, neo-fascist, Christian-evangelical, conspiracy theory sound board then apart from about five people, there's really no one else to stop you as they've all left.

You have the support of most of the mods too apparently.
I believe the majority of the mods are left of centre so I really don't get your hysteria.

Currently I can see 6 active moderators out of 7, 2 of which are right of centre, this would seem a far healthier balance than 7 left of centre & 1 right of centre which was the previous set up.

You guys are not the Supreme Court or the parliament. You are there to moderate so I would expect this to mean ensuring a civilized discussion free of personal insults and trolling, but not moderating based on your political beliefs. This is a general comment, not pointing at any individual one of you.

I totally agree. The departed mods wished to be the Supreme Court & their political beliefs were the only acceptable beliefs. Had they followed your guidelines they would still be mods & I would not! Thats the way the cookie crumble when power corrupts.

I think we all may be placed right, center and left depending on the discussed political issues, tbh. I never showed anyone where I placed on that L/R political map we had a few months back, I would never hear the end of it and I am sure that one day I will meet MissEnglish at some antsy demo.

What we seem online to the public quite often also represents our efforts to provide balance, if we see an urgent swing to any extremes. But that is just my optics.

Hey, what covid madness? Family and friends died during the peak of the 2nd wave: last December and January. Deaths approach to zero at least since 2 months ago.

These days what we're missing is only clubs, concerts and big events. Restaurants and terraces opened long ago, sport centers too. Masks are going away in a few weeks. Well, some people is suffering because they're being dragged back to the office, but that was the normal before. CH opened the borders to new immigrants, couples are no longer separated by borders....so, what's up?

Maybe more people would be respectful of your views and opinions if you didn't behave like someone who thinks they look "cool" when they try to belittle others who are concerned about a potentially deadly virus and a pandemic.

Re: Coronavirus

Pancakes, I was going to type , how I'm not here to suck up to someone, a community, social ladder or the knows convergent evolution, divergent evolution, parallel evolution, and coevolution ...

Let's say , how my comments were more like a 'shot in the dark' ... I'm profoundly surprised how the what's supposed to be the 'most intelligent' ones , here... are lacking so much of that critical approach to what's been fed to us .

Still, I'm sure most of the members here, did go through Huxley, Orwell, Sartre, Ursulla Le guen etc.. and know about human nature so much .. How come, they all like sheep , bent-over some ridiculous statements.. "we care for you, so put a horrible plastic on your mouth and wear it all day long even at home..because we care for your life and we instruct you to refrain from fresh air in order to save your life. Yeah right. So yes I did ask myslef about that cognitive dissonance ...

We are obstructing our own basic instinct , need like breathing including children, in order to save humanity? We let walmarts, migros, coops, open including Mcdonalds and their friends while we shut down small businesses, tiny shops, restaurants, ... gyms .. but yeah you can stay all day in line at migros ? still, no illnesses or death rates amongst those cashiers and ppl who work there, hospitals around the world, doing tic toc vids , singing jerusalema including the suisse police ... I dont know, but I'm sick of of this hyprocrisy and people being so easy to manipulate throught the (argumentum ab auctoritate), appeal to authority . Because, once you look into the "authority" who's there? really the ones who wish you the best? &

I might be wrong of course, this is why I'm seeking some good arguments to bring me to reason

Sport is healthy, they said.
Maybe think again, the spike-up is attributed to the gatherings in the football stadiums due to the Euro 2020. Hence the uneven distribution between the sexes.
