I just found out the same is true for the county i grew up in, in Pennsylvania, USA. All schools closed, non-essential stores also. They have 13 (reported) cases out of 850,000 population.

Why is CH dragging it's heels on this?
Are you referring to Montgomery County? That is where we have a home and my daughter and son who live there just sent us a link regarding closures there. The governor states that Montgomery County is the epicenter of the virus which has afflicted PA - hence the closures!

Re: Coronavirus

So the British response seems to be based on some notion of herd immunity where the virus is allowed to gradually permeate 90% of the population and those that make it through are then immune and no more a risk.

Meanwhile the at-risk populations (elderly, pregnant women, immuno-suppressed etc..) will presumably be kept in isolation whilst the immune herd are developed.

Based on the most optimistic scenario of 1% fatality, we are still taking about hundreds of thousands of deaths

Quote:
Johnson’s ‘herd immunity’ plan appears to mean a decision by the Tory government to stand back while – in the most optimistic scenario – hundreds of thousands of our people die.

To Johnson, Cummings and their fellow fans of eugenics, that might just mean ‘the herd’. But to you and me, that’s our loved ones, our friends, our colleagues – if we’re lucky enough to survive their plan ourselves.

Re: Coronavirus

The corona virus has some good. It drives people in on themselves. Forces people to look at their lives and where they are going. Most will go back to their everyday lives after it's over. But the effects will be there in small ways

As long as nobody is panicking, right.

Looks like CH believing in the same theory, I think Italy used to as well until everybody got ill. Because you cannot isolate the fragile ones efficiently for until it blows over. The latest news from Italian healthcare people said that they are out of the capacity to save the fragile ones/risks groups and prioritize treatments of patients with a higher chance of survival.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.the...rticle/607807/

The same news comes from CZ medical staff that works in Italy, they send reports to CZ to brace themselves, and prepare when there is still time.

The delay phase must be organized in advance, not use it as a term when authorities just woke up late, or had their decision making inhibited. I also seriously wonder what WHO is doing.

"Get Covid Done!"

Governments have the planning in place for this. They know what is likely to happen. They know the spread is inevitable (or is it?).

The healthy oldies best chance of survival is self isolate.

WHat do you mean?

WHO are not responsible for government's action though, they are only an advisory organisation.

I just checked. As far as I can tell, pregnant women are not at-risk group.
https://www.sciencealert.com/reassur...an-anyone-else
https://www.rcog.org.uk/en/guideline...and-pregnancy/

It is expected the large majority of pregnant women will experience only mild or moderate cold/flu like symptoms.

There are no reported deaths of pregnant women from coronavirus at the moment.

If you are pregnant you are more vulnerable to getting infections than a woman who is not pregnant.

There is no evidence to suggest an increased risk of miscarriage. There is also no evidence that the virus can pass to your developing baby while you are pregnant (this is called vertical transmission).

All subject to change of course, as absence of evidence isn't strong evidence of absence.

Be pragmatic and stay safe - you mean? Her thoughts exactly! She has lived an amazing life. Time for me to let go; easier said than done...
It is so much easier said than done. What a terrible dilemma to find yourself in. Obviously I don't know your mother, but a lady who has reached her age will have seen a lot and experienced a lot throughout her life and is no doubt of the generation where she would want to protect you and your children. It won't, of course, be the same but you and your family here can accompany her through the final stages of her life in your thoughts and hearts. Who knows the real power of love?

Wrong.

Take the time to read if not the document mentioned, at least the article in your link.
The document talks about recommendations to follow in case the situation should become impossible to deal with. The authors themselves stated that the intention was to stimulate a reaction to avoid getting to that point.
We're still a long way from that point.
What Italy is doing is precisely to avoid being at this point.
Until now in Italy no doctor has had to choose which patient to treat and which to let die.
Please, the subject is serious, it also requires seriousness to talk about it in a public forum.

Important to note that the "without" scenario assumed there were no restrictions at all, so without any of the measures already taken. You can see the full scenarios here
