Re: Coronavirus

From Washington post …
Quote:
The U.S. government issued its most severe warnings against travel to Britain this week as coronavirus cases and deaths there soared to the highest levels in months and authorities in England scrapped nearly all remaining restrictions in a bid to restart the economy.

The State Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday urged all Americans to avoid visiting the country. “Even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants,” the CDC said in an updated travel notice.

In its highest-level advisory Monday, the State Department delivered an even sterner warning. “Do not travel to the United Kingdom due to COVID-19,” the advisory said.

Where did you get your data from?

Everyone in the field of epidemiology said that without mass vaccination we won't get back to normal very soon. I wouldn't contest obvious, basic facts.
Mass vaccination and vaccine passports are not the same thing

Did I say it was? No. I commented on your assertion that these vaccines are not as efficient as scientists claimed to be. Moving the goalposts is not nice, TC.

The only thing your example demonstrates is why it’s wrong to put so much faith in scientists to take decisions. The most frustrating part of working with scientists, technicians and engineers is their ability to get bogged down in minor details whilst completely missing the bigger picture.

Real world data is showing the efficacy (or effectiveness if you prefer, ultimately for the sake of this argument they may as well be the same thing!) of these vaccines against transmission to be significantly less than measured in trials. The headline should be “argument for vaccine passports and enforced vaccination collapses as evidence mounts”. Yet there’s people like you focussing a description deliberately made for the layman
Our resident COVID-19 science expert still does not understand the difference between efficacy and effectiveness.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the famous greenmount pivot- construct a straw man for someone and then clumsily accuse them of doing exactly that. Happy to see it alive and well

Re: Coronavirus

Spoke with my father in law last night - a very well educated man and yet he & my MIL do not want to take the vaccine because "they are worried about long term side effects". Mercola, covidiots on Facebook etc. are such a toxic & powerful force in this world in these times.

We are honestly heartbroken over it, my husband is convinced he will have to say goodbye to at least one of them soon since they are not in the best of health (but could still have a good bunch of years left in their life). We have tried our best, even had my libertarian father called them to try and convince them, but to no avail.

Anyone else in the same kind of situation with family members/close friends?

I feel for you in this situation.

I had one close friend who did not want to take the vaccine, but the delta wave made him change his mind.

I'm guessing from your age they must be in their 60s at least. That's dumb. Really dumb.

Nowhere near to that extent, and I can imagine how concerned it makes you.

I just have one friend who has refused to be vaccinated. I've known her for 40yrs, and she's always been headstrong. She's just turned 60 and has no underlying health conditions, but her twin sister does. She used to go on cruises with her husband 3-4 times a year, so I went down that track in trying to convince her. The conversation went "I'm not having the jab!" - "You're not going on any cruises!" - "Oh yes I am!." - "No you're bloody not".

That was in the full knowledge that she'd already had two booked cruises delayed, but had chosen not to claim a refund and just travel on the new dates. Since the cruise line (Royal Caribbean) announced that all passengers must be double vaccinated, she's gone quiet about it, so I'm hoping that she got vaccinated on the quiet.

Yes. Idiotic. Won't take the vaccine "yet", prefer to "wait".

Anyone else in the same kind of situation with family members/close friends?[/QUOTE]

My husbands friendship of over 50 years with his oldest school friend has really been tested as his wife is a total anti vaxxer.

Despite my husband being in hospital for 3 months with covid and nearly dying twice they just don't seem to get it - I spoke to the wife the other day and she is full of conspiracy theories, figures being untrue etc etc and i had to terminate the telephone call as I didn't want either of us to say something that we might regret.

What is so shocking is that her son and family are now all living together with them - he works abroad and is flying every week and the children are school age.
They don't seem to get how vulnerable they are as both are 70..

I'm so sorry for the difficult time you have gone through, hope your husband is doing better. Sending well wishes!

My in-laws are at least isolating full time, which is another worrying factor as it is having a very bad impact on their mental health. He genuinely thinks herd immunity will happen soon and I have no idea why he thinks that when it will only happen once people like him are vaccinated. Anyway ... they do see their grandchildren (young teens) and make visits to their "naturopath doctor" - my husband and I are positive this is how they will most likely contract the virus.

That sounds very familiar. Reminds me of when our youngest nephew was terminally ill, and his aunt posted on facebook that he should be given alkali water to "cure him". All hell broke loose and that friction within the family hasn't dissipated 4yrs later.

Re: Coronavirus

I'm sorry if this seems like I'm changing the subject, but I was wondering if anyone here can remind me who it was that had posted here a few weeks ago that they had received an antibodies test that showed the antibodies they developed from the vaccine?

The reason I ask is because I talked to my doctor's office earlier today about getting one for myself, as I'm still a bit nervous about our upcoming camping trip; and if there is any way possible, I'd like to feel reassured that my two doses did in fact cause me to produce antibodies. But my dr. said that she knows of no such test available here in Switzerland and that a regular antibodies test would not show whatever antibodies someone develops from the vaccine.
