Tony Clifton was right! Really surprised its peaking so early. To be honest I'm not really sure its helpful given its just going to push the cases back to the winter.

Helps that the country has emptied at the moment

Yes, the virus will come back, but the link between cases and deaths has been severely weakened thanks to vaccines. Time to get life back to normal now and hope the vaccines hold up come winter time. As this professor at UCL writes,

Quote:
“the vast majority of the global population is expected to get infected by the virus, likely more than once over their lifetime...

...in places with sufficient vaccine supply, the increased transmissibility should act as an incentive to get vaccinated. It is not so much anymore a 'duty to others' to get vaccinated but a protection for oneself. There won't be any 'herd immunity wall' to hide behind...

...The only - untapped - benefit of the situation is that this should end the culture wars around vaccines. People should be encouraged to get vaccinated, but at the end of the day, the primary objective of vaccination now is to protect oneself, not others. So, live and let live....

...Equating SARSCoV2 to measles, which could be largely eliminated with vaccines always felt a bit fanciful given the biological differences between the two viruses, but is now not even worthwhile discussing. SARSCoV2 will circulate as an endemic virus for the foreseeable future...

...I encourage everyone to get vaccinated, but also to try to be kind to those who make a different choice. Getting vaccinated for covid primarily protects you, and only very marginally others in society. Non-vaccinated people don't tend to be a direct threat to vaccinated you."

I'd really like to know how many of the older people who haven't been vaccinated have been naturally infected.

In Netherlands the growth was almost vertical and still the peak was in the middle of July and now the cases are going down again.

You were also correct on the UK stats, quick peak to 50k last weekend and now it’s more than halved.

If my memory serves me correctly, last year the Balkans got off quite lightly during the first wave of Covid, however cases exploded later in the year as many people from Northern Europe (including Switzerland) returned home for the summer taking Covid with them. I could imagine the same happening in these holiday destinations at some point (although Spain has already seen a surge in cases that seems to be flattening out now).

There are signs stating that purchases are subject to random checks. In addition, many coops and migros have an employee assigned to the self-checkout section, especially in the larger stores.
I've been randomly checked a number of times at Coop, never at Migros.

A minor kerfuffle at the checkout once when I switched a product for a different flavour (same price). Clerk mentioned that it is to customer's advantage to be checked by her since an unrecorded item is not deemed shoplifted as you haven't taken it out of the store.

The selection is not totally random. If you have deleted several scanned items, if you've been found to have made mistakes in the past, or if you've bought a lot of stuff I think your chance of being controlled increases.

Compare this with an incident I had at Costco in Croydon: I'd bought 2 boxes of Quaker Oatmeal, one was (by mistake) flavoured. When I brought it back the returns clerk couldn't find it in my records (you don't need receipts to return stuff, Costco has it on their computer if you have that country's membership). Turned out the checkout clerk had scanned the plain oatmeal twice. So my refund had to be contrived.

I swear I get checked more the few times I change the language to English. Almost certainly just my paranoia.

If I haven‘t shopped in a coop for a while I often get a check. Fortunately, they pick 3 to 5 items and if you‘re good, that‘s all. I‘ve never been checked in a Migros.

Amazingly I have never been checked in a shop either in Switzerland or anywhere else. I guess I look like butter would not melt in my mouth

I suspect it is a random selection triggered by an algorithm at the self scanning checkout. Nothing to do with appearance.

12 bottles of Champagne obviously does not set off anything in coop, they probably think I scanned them more than once

Correct me if I'm wrong. But was the situation on the Balkans really that bad? From memory, wasn't it more the fact that in countries like Serbia there weren't enough hospital beds, and they were also late in starting to ramp-up vaccination, but overall and percentagewise the wave wasn't notably worse than in many other countries.

That and many southern European countries having a lot of elderly people.

When I buy anything with alcohol I go to the manual checkout because typically help takes ages to come at the automatic ones.
